MrsGolem’s favorite. It’s blue and currently stickered so it’s got that going for it.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
This’ll probably be gone before I could get to it.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Not sure how I feel about this one. I’d have to get a good look at the rust repairs.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
*Yawn*
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Fixing the rear brakes shouldn’t be an issue.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Would be a sweet little car if that’s the only issues.

Other than the 2000 Malibu and the Santa Fe, they all look like junk.
And the Santa Fe is out unless you’re buying it to scrap it, we already have enough CUVs clogging our roads...

Nah, that Santa Fe is perfect for her.

When I was 19 my dad tried to talk me into buying an Olds Cutlass, same as that 2000 Malibu. I told him it was the most boring car I’ve ever seen and had zero interest in owning it.
I bought a 99 Civic instead and loved it.
My point is by that nice green civic.

I honestly wouldn’t consider anything Hyundai or Kia from before, oh, 2011 or so when they decided to get serious. IIRC the 2003 Santa Fe has a reputation for being a piece of junk.

I’d love to buy the green C ivic but I have little faith in it not being snapped up by some Honda guy looking to abuse it.

The Santa Fe is my favorite. An updated radio with Bluetooth audio streaming would be a fantastic gift down the road. If it makes you feel better, Hyundai still uses that ugly two-piece key on their base models today. So unless people look at her car, they could be thinking she drives a 2013 Sonata!
I also like the detail in the 2000 Civic listing.

When I was 16 I had the choice of a 65 Chevy C10 or a 1995 Civic Coupe. Even though the Civic was “nicer” in every metric, it just felt cheap to drive. I went with the 65 C10, no regrets.

In my experience the generation Elantra that ended in 2010 (4th/HD generation) was dead reliable and easy to work on. Early 2000s are still a hard pass.

Are you just looking at Craigslist? Ever since they’ve started charging $5 to post a car, the good cheap runners/beaters in my area have stopped getting posted there and started getting posted to Facebook Marketplace instead.
Also, if a early 2000s CUV is fitting for her, I’d seriously consider a 1st or 2nd generation CR-V. They’re good cars!

Cheapest deal on there is a base model Subaru (manual!) for net cost of $224 / mo.
It’s gonna be a lot safer and more reliable in the long run. Plus Subaru so better in winter. Tell her to get a job to pay for it.

I get fed up with the, “I have XXXX, what should I buy?” thing. When you’re dealing with a small budget, the answer is whatever decent one you can find. I’ve got a coworker who wants a decent truck, that isn’t too old and isn’t too expensive. He keeps asking me what truck he should buy. I dunno dude, buy the decent one that you can find.

If you’re in a position where you can wait though you can be picky and wait for a particular car. My daughter doesn’t * need* a car. She can and does use our cars. It would make things better for us if she could bring herself home from practice and our LittlestGolem would love to be driven to school in the morning.

Fair enough. FWIW, and I’m sure you know this as well as I do, but a cheap (I’m putting ‘cheap’ at 3k) car’s cost is only
its down payment. These fuckers are money pits.

Definitely. I just don't think it makes sense to pick xyz model. You do what you're doing, you wait for the right condition of vehicle to come up, whatever make/model it is.

Right. I’m at the point with the lack of reliability in my VWs that I’m honestly considering picking up a Cavalier (coupe with a stick because
speed
) because they’ll run until they rust in half.

They do look nice. But they’re somewhat expensive for my taste

Agree on meh interior. I noted that the interior door pulls were just kind of a part of the door card, so when you closed the door, the whole card bent. She had the cards out to change speakers, so maybe they were just reinstalled poorly.
How well does a Cobalt handle? Better than the average econobox? They do look nice...

It handled well in my opinion but I’m not a race car driver and I have fists of ham. The SS trim was rated pretty highly by car mags when it came out.
It certain ly felt nicer than most cars I’ve driven. It was comfy but I didn’t have it long before I was rear ended and it was totaled .

You can get earlier Priuses for fairly cheap , and they should still have useful life, considering how many are used in fleets today. Your daughter would probably appreciate spending peanuts on gas.

I’d go for the older Civic- the later ones aren’t quite as well engineered as they used to be. I’d try finding a manual though. More reliable, more fun, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets better gas mileage, given that automatics from back then weren’t as good as they are now.
