Glad this crappy spring with weld blobs and dremel tool cuts all over it is out of the the car, never to go back in. I didn’t end up compressing it fully, just enough to get it off its seat and then slide the seat off the A-arm together with the spring. It still “popped” slightly when getting pulled out, but I didn’t trust cranking down on this thing till it was fully compressed. Previous Owners are the real deal.

I love those spring compressors, there's always that fun danger of "will this pop out and shatter my leg/kill me?"

I have that set of compressors. I also have another set from another cheap vendor that happens to be a slightly different style (4 hooks instead of 3). I try to use both sets together wherever possible so each backs up the other.
Compressed springs are scary.

Given “fun” I’ve
previously experienced with springs and spring compressors - including notably on a Crown Vic - I was delighted to find that the Galaxie is a simple matter of popping the ball joint and lowering the arm with a jack under not-very-much tension until loose. There’s even a hook on the control arm so that you can hook the spring and bring it
about halfway up by hand. The easiest coils I’ve ever dealt with, due to lack of modern preload ranges.
