An April fools joke that has unintentionally become a permanent feature in our office.

If you weren’t aware, when contractors install equipment or fixtures or anything else which has a keyed lock, they typically tape the key to said thing for the owner to deal with.

Well, back in March our office finally replaced the paper towel dispenser in our first floor restroom because it was constantly broken. My coworker thought up this idea and, since we’re all designers, made a fairly legit looking “voice activated” logo. Since the key was taped to the top, installation was easy...

...what wasn’t expected was that maintenance would remove the key the evening of April 1st...

So for 2 months now we’ve had it up, and at this point everyone assumes it’s legit because we’re so far removed from April fools. The frequency of people talking to the paper towel dispenser is actually increasing and the best part is when they come complain to me and my coworker that it doesn’t work...

...to which we reply: “You just have to say it louder and slower.”

it’s a poor design for a notice :P

upon my first quick read (which is all I would give it when in the bathroom) I assumed it was asking me to say the word “loudly”.

I for sure would have just stood there and (possibly loudly) said “loudly” over and over. before reading it again and seeing I was saying the wrong phrase try the correct phrase “dispense towel”

I hate those things. Such a waste of time and batteries. Someone set one of the ones at my building to give out minimal paper with a long delay. Now if these things are high enough and set to leave a towel hanging out, it’s fairly easy to pull out the length of towel you need. I got rather frustrated one day and gave  it a punch and it popped right open, allowing me to change the settings to something that doesn’t piss anyone (except the bean counters) off. When it was open I also discovered that the cheap stamped steel key I have on my keyring, for an unknown device, was just the right size to open these dispensers up and allow me to change the settings if I needed to.

Similar thing happened in our office. They got a fancy new coffee machine that grinds the beans and all that. Someone immediately put a “voice activated” note on it. I think it caught a few people at the start, but since then everyone has realized that it was a joke.

We’ll have to see when the CEO visits...

I l ove this. One of the reasons this gag works is because people really do design and sell things like this. For instance, you can buy on Amazon right now a motion and voice activated trash can . You generate the right societal context and you can get people to fall for anything.
