im still pissed off at me local cinema for having a popcorn break about an hour into the movie (aka just when all that tension building was starting to pay off)

ffs its not a long movie you greedy bastards

(anyhoo.. break ruined the movie)

I think they stopped doing intermissions in the US about 50 years ago. 3 hour movie? Gotta pee? TOO BAD.

Weird choice for an industry that’s so greedy. I would expect 5 breaks in the movie to sell more candy.

completely blindsided me when me local turned out to have them.... i would have gone elsewhere had i known

(i assume its to pay for the swanky new building they have... and coz summertime this town is full of tourists who hate  money)

I’ve only been to the theatre twice in the past year and one of those times was for an opera broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera in New York: Daughter of the Regiment . I don’t like going to the theatre. I prefer my 52-inch plasma television and it’s ten steps to the kitchen and the Whirley-Pop corn popper. (Try using olive oil on your popcorn; it’s excellent.)

I have to admit, I’ve never been to a movie theatre in Europe except for once in Iceland. They had intermission and my friends thought I was weird for asking about it.

“That’s when we go get our hamburgers and beers, then go back for the rest of the movie.”

Seemed really weird at the time (1999) but now a lot of our US theatres are doing it -- the food and drink, not the intermission.

Now that movies go from theatre to DVD in a couple months, it’s almost pointless.

For a LONG time it was 1-2 years before VHS , so going to the theatre was much more reasonable.

Friend of the family’s Dad was at Dunkirk, and landed himself in the drunk tank the night before the Germans arrived. He and his compatriot came to with the cell door open and their rifles by the door. They left in the wrong direction from the jail, and held up the German advance .

They got some sort of crazy medal out of it, I think it was the Military Cross if I remember correctly .

“Gee grandpa, can you tell me the story of how you won that award?”

“I got blitzed and while I was sleeping it off the Germans attacked. I wanted some sleep so I fought them off to take a nap in peace”.

Pretty close to how things went down, apparently the Germans thought they were some sort of special forces, they were just lost and hungover.

The pigeon story? I saw that. Neat. North Africa, though it was one of the signal victories of the war, doesn’t get the amount of press today that it deserves. The Allies won their first big boss fight.

I’m mad at myself for not leaving it as “I got blitzed.....then I got blitzed.”

It’s easy to think of a front chewing through multiple hundreds of tanks in major offensives and with tens of thousands of POWs as a major front, but the truth is that until very late, it was a somewhat limited engagement. Not much in the way of traditional front action, with villages gained, interdiction, resupply by rail, major communication support, battalions of infantry in clearing action ...

Instead, a fight in the middle of a whole lot of nothing, with Axis forces which simply couldn’t be supplied to support optimum operation, and Allied forces whose commands were constantly being cannibalized for other fronts down to the point of minimum effective strength to keep the Axis in check. Greece, CBI, Malta, and other engagements attracting more attention or even having active materiel diverted.

The equivalent of a Lakers-Knicks game early in the season with cautious coaching and limited score, now worth remembering mostly for heavy reliance on skilled point guards. It’s only in a limited engagement with a lot of uncertainty that an ostensible 240 day siege of a small fortress (Tobruk) is even conceivable.
