Can someone explain Walmart to me?

How can different branches of the same chain have wildly differing prices on the same exact item? I went looking for this router and went to the stores that said they had inventory and the low price, but none had it in stock. Other stores had it in stock, but not discounted. WTF? What am I missing? I don’t understand ...

I imagine shelf space is a very valuable commodity. If it’s selling well at some stores but not others, get rid of them at the ones where they’re not selling and put something that’ll make money.

Well, they've got 37 stores within 3 miles of each other, so why wouldn't they just ship excess inventory that doesn't sell to a nearby store that's selling plenty of that item? Why mark it down cheap when they could easily get their full asking price just a couple of miles away?

Expense and opportunity cost, I suppose. They have more profitable ways to use their shipping capacity.

Anyway, this is all pure speculation. There’s a CVS distribution center near me and I’ve often thought it’d be interesting to work there for a while to get a feel for how logistics really works.

There are a couple of reasons.

Typically there isn’t a direct shipping link between the stores. Occasionally a single truck could serve two stores making it possible to easily transfer items from the store that’s the first stop to the second, but they can’t readily transfer items to any of the other locations in the area. That means they’d need to ship it by UPS so now the profit is lost due to the cost of shipping. They could send it back to the distribution hub and have it transferred, but that’s a major hassle for all involved so unless it’s a really high demand or profit  item at a specific store the manager probably doesn’t consider it worth the hassle to even try. Sometimes it’s so slow that a corporate restock request is faster than a transfer.

Also, the manager at each store will be judged on the profitability of his specific store. Discounting items and selling them at a smaller profit looks better on his revenue reporting than transferring it to a different store that can sell it at full price.

Once you’re on Brickseek, all reasonable thinking is invalid. Those are usually local managerial clearance deals with no expectation of rhyme or reason between stores.

However, for normal priced stuff, WMT will normally price match other stores or their website if you find a discrepancy.

FWIW, in my entire life I’ve never had an item truly ring up wrong there. At Target, it’s almost every single trip. I don’t like Walmart much, but damn they’ve got inventory management pretty nailed. And with 3-4 times the number of skus of the competition.

Walmart is shit. That’s what you’re missing.

On the other hand, I think they honor online pricing if you show it to them at checkout. Unfortunately, I haven't been to a Walmart since I moved to Georgia, so I can't say whether that still rings true.
