I noticed today that one of my employer’s priui has suffered an odd injury from being a fleet car. Now these cars have the typical fleet damage, they are dirty, every price of interior the drive can touch is worn and dirty. There is plenty of exterior cosmetic damage for rushing/careless drivers. But check this out.

These are the spots where the window frame(upper half of the door) is welded to the inner door. It’s not just rusted the welds are cracked. This is from many 200lbs gorillas slamming the door shut with the frame. You can now wiggle the frame around. It is still welded too the outer door skin but you can see that’s wearing it too. This cracked paint and rust u set the mirror is evidence of that.

My point here is Priuses we’re not built with fleet service in mind which is kinda silly considering how good of a urban fleet vehicle they make. The Big rear hatch, and  40+mph in the city sure do come in handy.

This is another reason why big fleet buyers tend to settle on a particular make/model of vehicle and stick with it until the manufacturer forces them to change. The attributes that make for a good fleet car are often totally different from, or not at all relevant to, what makes a car attractive to consumers (hence things like the Crown Victoria, Checker cabs, and Mk9 Impala just hanging on and on) . The average person has no need to even think about how tough a car’s door welds are, but that clearly has to be a consideration here.

Those close-ups remind me how much I dislike the texturing Toyota was using in the mid ‘00s.

Weird. My car doesn’t suffer such damage, but my clothes do.  I put 18-20k on my car per year, and the left shoulder of my costs wear through due to seat belt wear.

I can never drive with a coat on unless I am in my Miata with the top down on a cold day. Any normal roofed car is impossible for me to wear a coat, no matter how cold the weather is. Since I need the heat to keep my feet from falling off and the windows de-fogged, jackets must go always.

Funny  because around Chicago Priuses make up a big percentage of the taxi fleet (which is rapidly dwindling but still)

Do you drive long distances at a time? Most of the damage in our cars is actually from some one  getting in and out the them 200-300 times a day.

I’m in real estate, so I often drive several hours at a time. Yesterday I drove over 150 miles. Today, I’m just sitting in my office all day. I had a really nice denim jacket I wore in the winter time, as it was warm without being bulky. My left shoulder wore because of the seat belt rubbing all the time. Same with a couple of other coats I’ve had.

Oh it’s horrible. It’s like they designed it to collect as much dust and dirt as possible. The Prius C has light grey trexured plastic everywhere and it’s impossible to keep looking clean.
