Just booked a campsite at Sequoia National Park n ext weekend. Really been a while since I did a dedicated camping trip and I haven’t been to this park yet, so it should be a good time. They still have quite a bit of snow up there so I’m in debate between bringing the Miata or Subaru, but the roads should be clear assuming it doesn’t snow again. There is just always something special about Miata camping trips. It seems almost too easy in the Subaru plus there are definitely some fun twisty roads worth enjoying in the Miata. I plan on getting up there Friday morning, seeing some tall trees with easy hikes, making some epic camp meals, and ideally doing a harder hike during the day Saturday.
This seems like a properly twisty road to enjoy Friday morning before the crowds show up for the weekend. It’s only about 3.5 hours from home to the campground at the base of the park so it should be easy enough to get in nice and early.
I've gotta try to find this view if possible!

I am seriously jealous. I’ve been t hrough the park but I didn’t get a chance to stay. I tried to get my wife to move out West somewhere (we had a chance to move to Colorado) but she can’t handle the cold. Instead of mountains, I get to see swamps.

Very cool, never been to Sequoia but hope to remedy that soon. H opefully it’s early enough season and/or cool enough to keep the crowds down.

I was going to ask you what you’d be sleeping in, but it probably won’t be a trailer since Miata or Subaru...

My wife and I visited there about 17 years ago (based on the fact that it was before our first child was born). We did not camp, but stayed in the lodge that has since been torn down and in the small hotel in Grant’s Grove (I think). We went in late May/early June, and the road to Moro Rock was still closed by snow. So we hiked up from the lodge and, when we got there, we were the only ones there. We had the whole place to ourselves for an hour. As we started our descent, they had opened the road and tons of people started arriving. Couldn’t have planned it better if we tried. It’s an absolutely gorgeous place. 11/10, would go back tomorrow. Have fun.

I'm hoping that the crowds were around for the holiday weekend and picking a time right after that should help. And while it'll be hot in the Valley, it should certainly be cooler at elevation.

I planned on going to Moro Rock for the sunset Friday . I’ve gotta find out if the road is open, but honestly I’d rather it be closed. Having to put in a little more effort always seems to make places less crowded. Snow in general is certainly going to get in the way of a lot of hiking areas but I'm sure there's still plenty to fill up the three days.

I'm always a tent camper! My backpacking tent isn't roomy but it certainly is easy to set up and is well made, so it keeps out the elements. Plus it Definitely fits in either car without effort. I basically pack for backpacking but with a cooler full of real food on the side. I'm in debate between bringing steaks or pork chops lol.

One of my favorite places in the world. Have fun! I’m a bit jealous.
Here’s my little orange tent at the Rae Lakes several years ago , looking toward Painted Lady and Glen Pass.

I went a few months ago. You’ll e joy the drive in and out for sure. We saw general grant, which is amazing. Then we left, since we had our 3 and 5 year olds with us, and there’s only so much you can do
