My wife’s cousin is staying with us this weekend. She loves to travel and her lastest idea is to buy some sort of camping vehicle (converted van, truck/suv+camper, etc. ) and take 3 months off next summer and tour North America. She knows I’m a car guy so we talked about possible vehicles.
Later the 3 of us were walking Ozz-man and we went to the super mansion neighborhood behind mine and I was like “Oh snap, I’ll show you the camping rig you need!” And directed the walk by a house that has this in the backyard:
Its a Family Medium Tactical Vehicle M-1078. Basically its a modern deuce and a half. I told her they make an M-1079 which is the same truck but with an enclosed, air conditioned radio cab on the back and you get them used surplus starting around $5k. I thought she was going to tell me I was a moron for even suggesting such a thing but I was shocked at how damn excited she was about this awesome, terrible idea.
We had a more realistic discussion about ownership and what it takes to make one right and drive and maintain it. Shes still not completely deterred. But Im looking for some other, perhaps more practical suggestions for a camping rig.

Oh, I know its awful, but I love to get people really excited about terrible ideas. We are watching the Dirt Everyday episode where they get one, and shes over it now.
I pitched the UHaul idea and shes more into that.

3 months? yeah, she’ll spend a year getting it ready. like sbnd said... there is Van life and overlanding and they are very different needs. a slide in camper on a pickup offers a good easy blend of
both
