Its not looking good, all cylinders are between 80-50psi with one at 25. For reference using the same test equipment, the old motor was at 140- 150 with 2 cylinders sitting at 75 and 100 respectively.

Added a bit of oil to the cylind ers which bumped compression up about 25psi.

The intake plenums were not included with the engine , seeing this timing belt dry rot makes me think maybe the engine sat around like that for a while and theres rust on the cylinder walls?

Looks like the turbo project will be much more extensive then originally planned.

Good news is you’d have replaced that timing belt anyhow, but not a huge upside. 180k is much miles; was the current engine knackered?

T he old motor was 200k with 2 bad cylinders after running boost through an untuned ecu and/or overheating at least 3 times

Have the valves been adjusted? or can you adjust the valves?

marvel mystery oil into the cylinders.

Damn, someone managed to kill a 1uz. And that belt is OLD wow my 15 year old belt with 150k had half as many cracks

How reasonable is it to ball hone and re-ring one of these? I don’t know much about the internals of the 1UZ, but fresh rings (gapped for boost) and bearings might be worthwhile regardless, as long as it’s doable.

(Also if the valves are rusty from being damp & open that could cause low compression; I’d pull the heads as a preliminary measure)

I havnt touched the valves. If I need to start putting products in the cylinders to get compression wont i t be unhappy with double stock output

Never rebuil t a motor before so dont know if the 1uz presents any special challenges , should go smooth but I’m not too sure about what specs to bring the bearings to and how sizing everything works. That being said research into bearing installs and ring gaps only started a couple hours ago.

If you haven’t already done so, take a look at some of the videos by Mustie1. He’s worked on lots of engines, mostly VW and single cylinder stuff, a lot of them haven’t run in years (or decades). Many of the engines he’s worked on start out with low compression, but lubrication and valve adjustment seems to go a long way towards getting engines that seemed trashed to run smoothly with even compression.

Oil it, adjust it and spin it over for a while - you might be able to get it in shape despite first appearances.

i meant the MMO to get everything lubricated and sliding freely.

Ouch dude, that’s a bummer.

When the compression goes up from adding oil, does that indicate that the piston rings are worn?

Everythin g slides free, there was an initial hard spot the first time I cranked it but after that it feels smooth

The oil indicates worn rings because it helps them seal, it a lso rules out valve problems because if a valve wasn’t properly seated, oil wouldnt effect compression.
