That’s just as good as our Matrix...it has very crappy mileage for such a small car.

City or highway?

Mostly highway, but my commute home is always stop and go for about 35 minutes, so I consider it all mixed. Not to mention how most the time, our highways here are stop and go.

That’s about what our 92 Caravan averages in mixed driving with the 3.0/3-spd combo.

Not bad for a 2.7L. I thought the 3.5 was more efficient, or just as efficient though? Above is the Prime yesterday morning.

T ry a Mazda5 6MT . It’s only rated at 21 MPG city, but the only time it got that mileage was when my 74 year old mother was driving it. Me? Frequently z ipping up to redline and driving hard for the fun of it, I usual get 18-19 MPG

But...how? That’s full size truck territory...from 2 decades  ago.

I could probably take some weight out (a few hundred pounds of water are frequently carried around along with a heavy toolbox - it is a van, after all ) as well as some other junk. My commute is only 2.3 miles, mostly through residential streets, so that’s not helping. I love to hear that MZR sing, so if I could keep it under 4,000 RPM that might help things. The manual has better ratings than the automatic, but that only works if you keep your right foot out of it and drive it like a grandma, as my mother did. It’s a Mazda, with Zoom Zoom in its DNA, so I drive it like a sports car despite the tall profile and sliding doors.

The 525i is even worse, with just 11 more horsepower it gets lower EPA ratings even though the cars are about the same weight. And when they went from the 12-valve M20, like mine, to the 24-valve M50, the ratings were even lower. And thi s was all before before the E PA adjusted the standards downward.

I w as somewhat surprised by the low EPA ratings despite it having an efficient 6MT and fairly modern tech. It’s nothing I wasn’t used to from my experience with the 525i so the costs are about the same. If they had done an updated model with the SkyActiv engine I might have been tempted to upgrade, but they didn’t s o I didn’t.

And those ratings you mentioned from two decades ago? Inflated, unrealistic numbers that prompted a change in how the EPA rated things, and probably never achieved in the real world. I can still get 30 MPG on long drives, something tho se trucks could never hope to do (see below) even with their artificially high ratings.

Yea, if you’re talking mostly city streets and a short drive that makes more sense. The full size truck comment was more with regards to the hwy mileage.
