Kinja'd!!!

My plan was to just throw some new seals in this nasty old thing, but there’s a *decent* amount of play in the sector shaft.

Should I roll the dice on a reasonably-priced replacement? I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about re-man units lately, but a RockAuto AC Delco reman is $161 vs. a RedHead gearbox that’ll run $461 by the time I ship the core in. I have no intentions of ever selling this truck, so I want to do it right, but I don’t like spending money I don’t have to. I feel like I’ve been out of the wrenching game for years at this point because of college and kids and I don’t know the state of replacement parts any more. :/

If the part that costs three times as much also triples your level of confidence... If not, feh!

I’m triple-confident it’ll drain my bank account...

What’s cheaper: a 461 dollar part, or replacing the vehicle with a newer one? I rest my extreme case.

recirculating-ball steering boxes have two possible states of existence:

1) sloppy

2) seized up

“Lake Oswego is one of the most affluent suburbs of Portland. In 2000, the city had a median household income of $71,597, up from $57,499 in 1990.”

Well, well, well. You hide behind your modest fleet but now we know the truth about your probable upper -middle-middle class lifestyle.

I’ve been hearing those horror stories too. Makes me want to just learn to rebuild it myself (if mine e ver goes bad).

Did I mention my house was filled with cat pee and the septic and HVAC were inoperable when I bought it? ...it was still ungodly expensive. And it’s barely in Lake Oswego.

So you’re saying I should just try resealing it anyway?

Oh I’m very, very, very familiar with buying uhhh sweat equity houses that involved the neglect of mammals by previous occupants and the invasion of less desirable animals.

The problem with steering boxes on older vehicles is that the remans  have been rebuilt multiple times and might have as much slop in them as old ones. Having said that, I bought a reman for my Camaro and while I’m sure a new one would be the best solution the reman is “fine”.

I did find a mouse nest while ripping out cat pee soaked drywall... I almost threw up in my respirator several times in the first few days of ownership. It was NAAAAASTY. All that for my “affluent neighborhood”!
