This is a compelling and insightful analysis. “Up” was one of my favorite movies I’ve ever viewed.

I was a huge Pixar fan for years, and I really feel the loss. I’d be hard-pressed to name my favorite, but WALL-E and Ratatouille are up there with the best films I’ve ever seen.
Nothing lasts forever.

Up was a beautiful movie, even if the beginning makes it nearly unable to be rewatched by me. Such a tough hump to get over, but the movie hinges on it.

They make movies that aren’t Cars , which is dumb.

Cars 1 and Cars 3 are both excellent, IMO.
I felt like Wall-E was a little derivative, and that Toy Story 3 was nowhere near as good as the first two.
Up was absolutely fantastic.
I just saw Brave on Saturday for the first time ever — underrated, very good. I don’t know how I ever missed it.
Inside Out was also pretty solid, but easily overlooked.
I had to type this while I read -- because f or me, I just can’t differentiate the Disney Animation Studios films from Pixar anymore.

No one is a powerhouse in perpetuity.
There are a million lessons in both the ‘do this’ and ‘don’t do this’ with Pixar
. I’m looking forward to what’s next. They set a bar so hard to get through, it’ll take real people telling real stories, and really fucking good artists to make those stories visible and coherent for audiences.
It’s the artists who make the production work for people, and who make the big bucks for Disney. And they’re the expendable/disposable part of the production.
Sorry I don’t have a pithy remark for this one. It’s just sad all around. Lightning in a bottle, and all that.

Does it hit home for you? That part where Sadness gives comfort is deeply moving. And, of course, the dad flipping out: hits too close to home for me ...
Reading the article provided explanation to me of aspects of the complexity of the movie that I never realized before.

I liked Cars a lot more than this story’s writer did. I thought the movie was intentionally cute, but not unsophisticated, while capturing the feel of the road. Good stuff. Haven’t seen the sequel.

As I said in a different reply, I think some money sold their creative license for money, plain and simple. Money wins.

John Lasseter is a piece of shit and I’m glad he’s gone from Disney. Of course now he’s at Skydance, but I’m not surprised another company gave this piece of shit a job. Skydance sucks for bringing him on

Lol. I mean, it made news about a year ago but apparently it was going on for years. People like that shouldn’t be in the workforce, let alone making children’s movies.
Skydance even launched an investigation before they hired him: https://www.cartoonbrew.com/artist-rights/is-skydance-endangering-its-female-employees-here-is-a-list-of-accusations-against-john-lasseter-168942.html

I’ll never forget how Disney fired him in the late 80s for saying CGI would be the wave of the future. Then they rehired him back a few years later. Whoops.

Cars 2 wavers between
terrifying and just confusing for little kids. Such a weird way to miss the mark. They made it for adults. Kids generally
don’t give a crap about spy movies.

Hold on, are you thinking about inside out? I haven’t seen that. Up was with the old man who takes his house up on balloons, with the boy scout tagging along. The intro goes from his as a boy with the girl next door, through marriage, lost pregnancy, life in general, to the death of the wife, all while trying to save up for a trip that never happens. Movie starts with him as the old man telling the world to get off his porch. It is brutally sad. I warned my wife, who thought "if you tell me what happens, it won't be sad when I see it". We had to stop the movie so she could cry it out. "It was so much worse than you said!"

I was genuinely upset (and still am) at the announcement of Toy Story 4, Toy Story was a staple of my child hood, and coincidentally put me and Andy within a year of the same “ age” so it was very easy to relate. I thought TS3 ended things perfectly and to hear that Disney/Pixar is now going to rip that apart for what is clearly a money grab is really disappointing . I’m sure I will watch it eventually, but I’m going to make a point to not see it theaters.

I have strong feelings about all of this. I personally do not like going to theaters, much preferring my 52-inch plasma television, Wifey, and popcorn with olive oil on it. I also have a difficult time submitting to feature-length films generally, though some, I enjoy.
The original Pixar stuff is so poignant that anyone who views the films winds up making an emotional investment and is then, somehow vested. I think this is what you are saying. So now, instead of giving us content like “Inside Out,” they’re trying to get us on amusement park rides. Amusement parks, in my opinion, are generally gross and I avoid them because ( lots of ) money. But that’s just my opinion.
Generally speaking, if droves of people are paying money to do something, I’m avoiding that thing until it becomes less expensive, or the crowds have thinned.
Anyhow, there’s my $0.02.

I still enjoy the theater , even though I do have a projector setup at home, but I’ll usually only go to some of the really big movies (Endgame).
I agree with all of this. However I don’t think we’re the target audience anymore, I think Disney is after the kids who’s parents have grown up on classic Pixar, and have introduced it to their kids, but the kids don’t realize yet that these new sequels are in fact bad. Kids just want all the Toy Story/Frozen/insert- popular- movie- here they can get. Kids also love amusement park rides, and they don’t have to pay for them. I’m sure Disney is banking on parents who are willing to pay for their kids to experience those things.

That article lost me in the opening paragraph. Cars was a fantastic movie. Movie reviewers don’t understand cars, so Cars gets lost in translation to them. Cars 2 was indeed a piece of shit. It was so clearly written to have as many characters as possible, so they could sell gobs and gobs of merch. I turned that pile of crap off about 1/3 of the way through it. The person we borrowed it from was actually disappointed to get it back . I haven’t watched 3 yet, but gear it was good.
I actually liked Incredibles 2 more than the original. It dealt with some deep and genuine marital and familial issues, and I liked that the family wasn’t constantly fighting with each other like in the original.
