Removing the water pump was an extreme PITA. Only broke one stud :P

Kinja'd!!!

This thing did NOT want to come off.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s gasket wants to stay too.

Kinja'd!!!

Have to extract this broken stud. It has studs on the bottom and bolts on top. Probably has to do with the thickness of the casting in each place.

This portion of the job took way longer than it should have. And required more hammer and prybar than expected.

Today’s progress was not very good. I did wire brush and prime a bunch of the sheet metal, at least.

The good thing about farm equipment is that it’s built with easy maintenance in mind. /s

Bubble-era Japanese-built farm equipment has more in common with a Mi tsubishi 3000GT VR4 than I‘d like to admit.

Oof, that broken stud looks like it’s in tough shape. At least you got the pump off without having to buy more tools. I always count that as a victory.

I’m’a let the liquid wrench sit on that overnight before I hit it with some heat try to back it out. I just hope I don’t end up having to drill it out and re-tap the block.

I haven’t had to deal with actual farm equipment since my grandfather sold his farm back in the 80s. His tractors were a mix of International, New Holland, Ford and British Leyland but those dated to the 70s so they weren’t what you’d call “complex”. He did buy a Kubota after moving to his new place but I never used or worked on that.

The amount of aluminum on this tractor is gratuitous.

All the places that should be steel for strength are, but all the places where a cheap stamped-steel part would have worked fine are cast aluminum. Valve cover, timing cover, intake manifold, thermos tat housing, water pump, fuel pump housing ... I was goin g to say “i’m surprised it has a steel oil pan...” but that makes sense, as on the bottom of the tractor it is exposed to rocks & etc , so steel makes sense over aluminum. The quality of the castings is exceptional too.

New aftermarket pump from a reputable supplier is $5 9. Only new holland sells rebuild kits, those cost $65. New OEM pump is $110. I went with a new aftermarket pump.
