So, there was a oil leak. BAD. 1L/2000KM. I was freaking out over it.
turn out, I didnt tighten the oil filter enough and it was leaking from there.
D’OH.
8 years of bike maintenance. This is the first time I’ve fucked up like this. I feel like a total moron. but at the same time, I’m super relieved that there isnt anything wrong with it
UPDATE BELOW:
As it turns out, it wasnt the oil filter...at least entirely. I came home today to a neat little splotch of motul 7100 under the bike in the garage -.-’’’’

It happens. I had an oil filter gasket fall off during installation. Turned car on. Oil as far as the eye can see. Luckily I check under car after oil change to make sure I didn’t leave anything out.

Are these the same image posted twice, or am I failing at a “find the differences” type kids’ challenge?
Stunning bike by the way.
And at least it was only loose and not leaking, loose can lead to undone and gone, and then you have oil starvation and death very rapidly. Or in a bike, fires.

ah i’ve been trying to catch you on a post. so did you gain authorship from any mods yet? look at the bar under the oppo logo at the clubopenings thing and comment on the most recent post there asking for authorship and party-vi should approve you now that you’ve been commenting more.

l’idiot, not le idiot. Sorry to be that guy.
As an old mustachioed mechanic in the army told me once, if it leaks there is still some in there. So it’s a good news.

Yes I did. I actually clicked around some and found the post where I can request to a mod to grant my the rights to post and they responded very promptly.
This is what we'll show whenever you publish anything on Kinja:

On the bright side, you would have been a bigger idiot had you put it on too tightly.

I changed the oil on my dads car and actually crawled under there a second time to make sure the filter was snug.

The motorcycles I’ve owned required the tightening of the oil filter more so than I was comfortable with, especially coming from cars. So I see where you are coming from.
Example is my SV650 requires tw o full turns after contact, not the haft to 3/4 turns of most car filters.

Good stuff. I followed you to see if it would permanently ungray you but now I assume it said Oppositelock now follows you which does that and gives you authorship, I think. Now the real question is should I still follow youlol

You removed some torques to save weight. Just one too many. On mine, the filter is at the back, in front of the wheel. Leaks=M r. T oad’s wild ride.

at least you didn’t do the old “forget to check the old gasket wasn’t still on the engine” thing. that is a messy rookie mistake.

dude i’ve had like 9 SV’s I only ever dide 1. even my Z1000 only needed 3/4 of a turn. either way, not a mistake that will be made a second time

Maybe it wasn’t too lose, maybe a defect with the gasket?

Oil leaks are never fun to track down. I had one on my CB500 that I was sure was a filter gasket, then I was sure it was the oil pan gasket and so on through several other gaskets.
It ended up being the shifter seal.
I ended up replacing a lot of 45 year old gaskets on the bike by the time I was done, but it was exhausting and frustrating. Now the only leak is a weep from the head gasket (oil cooled so no real issue other than cosmetic).

i’ve been talking with a few other triple owners and my next guess is counter shaft seal. then oil pan. then shifter.
if no dice there, then I’m really going to start freaking out.

Check the heat exchanger / oil cooler. Its the most likely failure point. Another tip is clean the motor with brake cleaner then blow baby powder on it. It will help tou track down the source of a leak.

Any chance you had it right, and the new leak is just leftover that was pooled somewhere in the frame or bodywork?

Opposite of the oil filter. Has coolant pipes going to it.

Your best option is a billet air cooled piece. You could just replacethe st ocker though if its an issue.
