Simon sent these to me to share with everyone! It features his stunning 1 series which he had gone back to Vancouver for after driving his 635Csi the first day.
Longtime Lurker’s roadtrip setup. Go Roughriders lol

I like how he went around the back and found both my and gmctavish’s Oppo stickers.
Also, I didn’t think about how many European cars were there until I saw those gas station photos and thought “hey most of those cars have their gas filler on the same side as my car.”

Yeah, west coast oppo seems to be all about the Japanese/Euro cars. East coast/southern oppo is really into the American cars (it seems to me)

This whole trip made me really want a BMW. Especially since he got that 1 series for what I paid for my Forte

Understandable , it wouldn’t be as cheap as the Forte to run, but for the most part it’s been pretty reliable. I’ve spent more than I should have on maintenance , but that’s because I didn’t do the coils myself.

lol you joke but GMctavish’s Subbie was not handling the drive very well. His transmission was cooking itself

Yeah, at somepoint (who knows when) I think I will replace the Forte with something nicer/more fun.

Among other reasons, our more gentle climate allows for the existence of older Japanese and Euro cars. So then you can develop a loyalty to the B R A N D and buy a modern one some day. Or, of course, you go back and find the classic you always wanted.

Was it an automatic? Those are not really set up for spirited driving.

See, you were picking up what I was laying down. But we may have several, uhhh, consumer-based patriotic folks on here so I kind of left it alone...

Nothing wrong with that. If you look at the 2 cars I’ve bought brand new, I’m making Mexico great again.

I had a 2.5L impreza with the auto, it was great for city driving or hwy cruising but when you started hustling it on back roads it quickly started saying no bro I don’t want to do this.

Hahahaha to be fair I lucked out on the deal. Been a great car to me so far though (already did close to 25k km since last August), and it’s already taken me to a track day and a Utah trip.
That said, keeping up with you on the drive to Pemberton was certainly no easy task!

I got a BMW specialist that works on both my E24 and E82, and I help out every now and then at his shop as well, which keeps the cost down.
The N52 in the 1er has been reliable so far though - that’s the one reason why I opted to go with the 128 instead of the 135 (which would’ve costed me around $3k more to own) . I already have one project in the E24 , so don’t fancy adding another one.

I have two blipshift stickers on the back of my 1 series, so I instinctively look out for these things.
Your Volvo is very, very nice though. Couple years ago when I was still driving around in manual wagons, I almost went and bought myself a V70R... Still ponder about that sometimes.

This was why I was glad not to be driving the E24 on Day 2 - a) I wanted to do a much more spirited drive; and b) the 4-speed ZF automatic in that E24 would probably kill itself in the process.

This could easily have been a early 2000s Volkswagen.

That’s the same reason I got an E92 328i over an E92 335i, for the reason that the N52 should be more reliable. I’ve got a friend who is willing to help me work on it, since the main thing I was lacking was a space. Other than coils and gaskets, it’s been good to me. L ast CEL, it was just an O2 sensor, which was easy enough to do myself. Think I might do the cooling system soon.
gmctavish needs more space

Yeah, I was indeed hustling on backroads, and the transmission was not a fan. I think it was cutting throttle or in some sort of limp mode at one point, even though I never got an AT Oil Temp warning

Nice! The good thing about my particular car is that it came “pre-modified” — on top of the Sports trim (which adds the sports suspension and the sports seats ), the previous owner also added M pedals, cross-drilled rotors, a set of Pilot Sports on wider tires, and the performance exhaust, which sounds bloody glorious. The funny thing is that he traded it in for an M2 at a BMW dealership, and the sales guy at BMW thought this car was completely stock.
The only thing that was missing is the ZHP shifter, which I added a week after I got this car.
Next year I might add the 3-stage intake manifold from the 330i and give it a chip to bring a little more fun to the equation.

My dad has the titanium exhaust on his 135is, it sounds so good. I can only imagine it on the N52. I’ve wanted to do the stage 3 manifold to it as well, but I’ve been more focused on paying it off instead of modding it, plus if I do anything to a car, it should probably be my E90 M3 first.

Fairly well. I said that I would take it to the shop right away.... predictably, that turned out to be a lie. I called one shop and they said the part would be $500 $600. Then I re-read the FCP Euro post that gmctavish found and realized this thing can just be removed from the steering column and tucked behind an interior panel, where would I only have to remove four torx screws and two panels to access it to un-jam it if it jams again. So I thought “why am I paying the shop over $600 to remove two shear-head bolts?” Now I’m trying to remove it myself. I have one bolt out, but the other is proving more difficult (they’ve both got blue loctite on the threads).
My next step is to take my soldering iron and warm the bolt up enough to melt the loctite, which should get the second bolt the rest of the way out (it’s currently a few turns out). I’ll be making a post about it in the next few days, once I either finish or give up. But a nice side effect is that, after cutting slots in the heads of both those bolts with my dremel tool and unscrewing one of them, the mechanism hasn’t jammed since (I’ve started it six or so times).

I am the owner of two BMWs and a Volkswagen manual turbo wagon before, so believe me when I say that I understand when our cars refuse to cooperate every now and then . It’s part of the charm.
Seriously though. I want that with all my heart.

Ooh, yeah, there’s a blacked-out V70R that’s frequently parked a few blocks away. It looks great.
If you want to know all the sordid details on this particular V50's fussiness (well, at least in the last few years), check out the post I made after going through its service history: Everything Wrong with My $5,000 Volvo .
