On Saturday, May 11th, in the Year of our Pork 2019, I was fortunate to make the pilgrimage to Luftgekühlt 6. I’d never been to one, but now that I’m a Luftyfooler I figured it was imperative. I was a little apprehensive because I tend to shy away from “scenes” and am not a car show guy, but this was so accessible and open, and the passion for these cars and the people around them so thoroughly ingrained in the event that my worries immediately melted away. Held at Universal Studios’ famed backlot, it was all I imagined and more, and I won’t miss another. I don’t know how they’d top this venue, it really created a special atmosphere. Especially up in the “Mexico” and “Wild West” sets, it was a very cool vibe, like a big family party. I was fortunate to meet many people I’ve only heard of or known from the internet, including our own Philipilihp, who flew across the country to immerse himself in LA car culture. It was a privilege to spend the day with him, look for his coverage on Live And Let Diecast.

This was also the first “big” trip for my SC, compounding my unjustified worries with justified ones about stranding myself somewhere. I prepared best I could, with a full complement of tools, fluids, and spares for likely failure items. Fortunately, those fears also proved to be unfounded because the car ran like a train, returning 23mpg over nearly 500 miles. I couldn’t be happier with the car or my experience at Luft 6. Others, professionals, have covered Luft to no end on the front page and across the great expanse of the interwebs, but I hope you find this interesting and maybe see some cars not shared elsewhere. On to the pictures:

Kinja'd!!!

PS: Rennfilms put out this great little short on the buildup & trip to Luft, worth the watch. The feeling that our time with these machines is slipping away is real, I think about it regularly and it’s part of what drove me to do everything possible to get my car. Smoke ‘em while you got ‘em...

See you on the road .

It was really, really cool. Crazy understatement, I can’t really put it into words yet . So glad I went, I’m still kind of fizzing about it. So many good people, and the cars were over the top. Great ideas and inspiration for my own journey, this fed the stoke in a big way. Driving my own car there felt special, I was nervous the whole time because it’s old and cranky and it was the first time out of town, but with every passing mile I relaxed a little. I hadn’t really come to trust the thing yet, so that was big. This was a good trip for writing ideas too. Thanks as always!

Happy to oblige. It was beyond comprehension, really, I’m still coming down from it. I cannot imagine how they’ll top that venue. I’d never been to one but had heard people talk about their favorites of past years, and the consensus seemed to be that though Luft has grown, this was the best yet . Really a special atmosphere, great weather too. Not too warm, and a brief afternoon shower that made for some interesting photo ops while cutting the crowd down a bit and cooling us off . Good DJs, good food trucks, amazing car staging and backdrops, it was all good . We stayed until about 4, I really wanted to keep hanging out up in the Western scene but had to hit the road home for Mother’s Day.

.....waiting for Luft-osten on the other coast.  Though after that venue, they’d have to shut down lower Manhattan to top it.

Great pics, thanks for posting.

It was a privilege and an honor to spend the day drooling next to Porsches all day. Also, I don’t know if this framing (the dude in the window taking a picture while you’re taking a picture) was intentional, but if it was , it’s perfect. I’m sure there’s some kind of allegory tucked away in it, but I’m too tired to come up with it right now.

Yeah, that would have to come up with a different idea...back to the warehouse theme maybe.

I’m still not over Rennsport VI last year , it was complete overload — so I’m still good for now!

I could picture it in some old industrial area, for sure. Maybe a port.

Rennsport was mental, I only had one whirlwind day there but I still go back to look at pictures. Luft felt like a quieter version of that.

Rad!! Been wanting to make one for awhile now, t hat and Friday breakfast club at Newcomb’s are high on my list if I can get a day off to drive down from SLO . G ot to meet the Prof at least. U ntil very recently my car hasn’t been ready for real driving, t he Luft trip was my first sortie out of town with it after doing a ton of work in recent months. Now I can think about really using it, so I’ll be on the lookout for his next run on IG.

It would likely be down south (weather!), but something like the Brooklyn Navy yards could be cool. Or Liberty State Park in NJ....o ld train station, marina on the water, NYC as a backdrop...that could work.  But not sure you could close it all off.
