Here lies...
My A4 Avant’s clutch. After more than 100K San Francisco bay area miles, its health had been declining after a recent sibling car borrowing incident.
Actually unclear whether it was the clutch itself that gave up the ghost. It didn’t slip, I just shifted out of second and was never able to go back into any other gear. Engine off I can move the shifter around, but with it on it won’t go into anything, as if the clutch pedal (which is now completely limp except the last 1/2 inch of travel at the bottom) doesn’t actually disengage the clutch.
Waiting for a tow to have the $1,200 at least job done

Eeeeee sounds like the transmission to m e. If it were the clutch, it would just not engage and rev with no resistance or power. Am I totally wrong?

hydraulic? could be the clutch master or slave cylinder. Otherwise it might be the diaphragm which went kaput.

Can you pump it rapidly in that last half inch of travel and get it to go in? If you can and it’s a hydraulic clutch I’d vote slave cylinder.

Definitely don’t think it’s the transmission. Most likely a clutch cylinder

Yeah that sounds more like a clutch line/linkage/cable failure than the clutch itself. Not sure if it that is better, but it SOUNDS better to me. If I were a betting man I’d say slave cylinder. Any leaks before this? Any more leaks than usual before this?

I guess I shouldn't compare signs of a bad clutch in a 40 year old Japanese something to a bad clutch in a modern German something

No idea! I barely drive, much less look under this car. My brother had borrowed it and completely burnt the clutch to hell in March and it didn’t feel right after that, but I had just assumed he had worn the already old clutch within an inch of its life. I’d already even shopped around for a replacement. I’ve never owned a car this old for so long, I had no idea what a wearing clutch actually feels like. Now it makes sense that it could have been something with the hydraulics all along (no reason for my brother to suddenly be so incompetent with a clutch).

I can’t say I remember this mess from last time I popped the hood (March to fill up windshield fluid):
For context that’s the area behind the hose coming out of the coolant reservoir in this pic (the 2.0T engine bay has a *lot* of room to poke around the engine):
And here’s the other side:

If not hydraulic failure (as others have alluded to) it sounds like the diaphragm spring on the clutch may have let go, worn out friction material wouldn’t just fail all-together and even then it’d be like the clutch pedal was always in, not out. Your symptoms are the clutch not disengaging (thus you can’t get it into gear) which is most likely hydraulic or, in second place, a broken mechanism for the release.

Sounds like the clutch master or slave.

I literally just repaired my Fiero that was claimed to have a dead clutch. It was a bad slave/master cylinder. Granted, I don’t know how difficult that is to fix on an A4. But the parts and labor are probably a lot cheaper than an engine/transmission removal for a clutch replacement.

I’m thinking you’d smell it if it were the actual clutch, (so that’s probably good.)

Throwout bearing? And 100K in that environment is probably about 30K more than I’d go. Good work!

Maybe you’ll get lucky and it’s just in need of a good bleed? I believe it shares the reservoir with the brakes. At least worth a shot

I’d bleed it first. If your BIL roasted on it, might have boiled the fluid at the slave cylinder. At least that’s the cheapest fix attempt at this point, just out some fluid.
