My girlfriend’s 97 Camry’s struts are long dead. She’s a grad student so $ is tight. Found this set from 1a auto which has the whole set for the price of a pair from most other places. Most of her driving is short distances around town but has to travel for field work from time to time. Figured they’re not likely to break and cause the car to crash but don’t want them failing after a year. So, anyone use their parts before?

This is a case where I’d just go find a Monroe/Meineke/AAMCO or other generic auto shop and buy the most basic ones you can get. I’ve heard of people having all four corners done for $400 or so, all inclusive. Totally worth it, IMO.
But I’ve got to admit, for DIY those pre-assembled struts sure are nice. I wish I could find them for every car. I’d gladly pay an extra $100+ to not have to compress springs or take it to a shop.

Never used their parts, but I do use rockauto a lot. How do the prices compare? If close, I’d go with rockauto just because they are tried and true.

They do have some less expensive options listed as well, but I’ve used the Monroe ones with good success.

I’ll be doing it for her. Considerably cheaper than any shop. She had it priced out a couple places. I think the cheapest was around $1000 for all 4 corners.

Rock Auto - $260 for 4 loaded Monroe struts. I would get economy Monroe over a no name likely Chinese strut. I have had very good luck with Rock Auto. This was my search https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,1997,camry,3.0l+v6,1273621,suspension,strut+/+coil+spring+/+mount+assembly,15174
Economy Monroe which I guess are good enough.
Here are original ride quality or whatever. $40 more

Personal experience; I had Monroe quick struts put on a 99 Camry, and was happy with them. Only put ~15k miles on them but I don’t see an issue with them lasting much longer.
As mentioned already, Rock Auto has the set for ~$290. Budget for an alignment, too.

Agreed, if it was a huge price difference and didnt have enough I would consider it but when Rockauto is with in reason o r cheaper, 100% of the time im going there.
Plus those are mo nroe, Better than a no name

I once bought a whole front suspension kit for my truck from there when I was down on money. Control arms, bushings, tie rod ends, the works, for super cheap. It took probably 3 months for the upper ball joint to go bad. So by the time I paid for two alignments, the cheap parts, and good parts I probably spent twice as much as if I’d just bought the good stuff the first time.

1A has been great for me the few times I’ve used them. That said, I’ve never bought drivetrain or suspension components from them. Those look like chinese quick struts. I’d avoid them. As others have said, go to a shop and get cheaper reputable ones, or use Rockauto. Either will be a similar result.
That said, unless she drives hard on her suspension, she likely won’t notice much difference between the current ones and the quick struts. They may be a bit more harsh and ride height might be a bit higher, so fuel economy may dip a tiny bit, but overall, she would likely be fine. You might call 1A and ask what company made those struts as well.

Name brand quick struts are a must. The best ones for the 4th gen Camry would be Sachs.
Sachs quick struts would be my first choice. Second choice would be KYB. Then Monroe.
The cheap Chinese no-name shit is done after 10k.
That said, I do like 1A’s videos

I found a pair of Monroe Quick struts for my Corolla on Amazon Warehouse deals for about $120 . They were returns, but otherwise new and uninstalled and work great. I didn’t want to fool with spring compressors and the like.

Yeah, I’ve used spring compressors in the past. However, that was when I was young and didn’t have an idea of how dangerous they could be.
