The interesting development of replacing the Land Rover Snatch, nicked named “Mobile Coffins” due to changing warfare conditions, to a new platform, and how Formula One helped in the design.

I remember when all this was going on. Many of the families of soldiers wanted rid of the Snatch Land Rovers, but it was curious because many of the soldiers themselves preferred them for patrolling because of there lightness, there compact size and their speed (which granted isn’t very fast) compared to the larger, heavier and slower mine protected vehicles.

Having worked in both the automotive and aerospace industries, I am extremely impressed with the 2-year design to delivery cycle.

What is the purpose of the grates covering the Panther and Ridgeback? Is that to deflect hand-held explosives?

They’re slat armor to prevent RPGs from detonating against the vehicle. There are nets that serve the same purpose as well

They’re a little annoying to look through, though :P

To stop mines or IEDs from exploding on the vehicle itself and stop magnetic devices from attaching to the vehicle.
