Forget just killing the penny, kill the nickle and dime as well.

Seriously, when the half-penny was withdrawn, it was worth $0.13 in today’s money. There’s no need for all this worthless small change.

Here’s my plan, centage tax. For every sales transaction that takes place, the last digit will be rounded up to the nearest X.X0 or X.X5 as a tax. Highest tax increase you’ll see is 0.04 per transaction. Thus over time the penny will no longer be needed and phased out eventually. Price is $7.41, add the tax it’s now $7.45.

I vaguel y remember penny candy and penny vending machines, but yeah, nowadays a penny doesn't get you much and life would be easier if we rounded up to the nearest .05

We should just have dollar coins.

Counterpoint: NO!

And get off my lawn!

Also, the existence of the one cent denomination allows for pricing of $X.99, which we all know is the very foundation of our retail economy. :)

Dollar coins would be a lot cheaper to have in circulation long term, but bills are so much easier to carry.

Can we also just go to a European style VAT while we’re at it? The nacho  place that just opened by my place has tax included and it’s just the best.

Man, seriously, don’t.

If you use cash often you have no idea how quickly you’ll end up with 25 lbs of change in your pockets. Every time you break a bill in come a few more 1 and 2 dollar coins. B efore you know it you’re toting 30 bucks in change and your pants are sagging. Unless you actively pull out a fistfull of change and pay as exactly as you possibly can for each transaction that is , and even then it tends to stack up.

Considering most day to day transactions seem to be done electronically these days it probably wouldn’t be worth the effort and aggravation to dump bills in favor of coins.

Since the dollar is essentially worthless thanks to inflation, we should probably just dump the decimal all together and round down. In Canada anyway... you can still get a 16 ounce can of Keystone for less than a buck in the states. Up here even the air has a dollar minimum...at the gas station anyway.

You’d think so.  A nd that’s what I thought too a few years ago, before coming to Europe.

I was wrong. I found myself constantly reaching for €1 and €2 coins. I didn’t have a car for a couple of months and I was constantly using the said coins to add tickets to my subway and bus cards and to buy train tickets for short trips around town . The vending machines from work ar e coin only too.

We have L oonies and T oonies, but we prefer electronic payments for everything from transit to parking meters and vending machines. Coins could go away and I’d likely only be mildly nostalgic about them. Until the first time I stuck a damaged bill into one of those hateful bill things only to have it spit back out again a dozen times, of course.
