What a 24hr soak in ten gallons of diesel plus a little elbow grease and carb cleaner can do!

Old college me cant let it go. The price to taste ratio is too good.

Cool!

Also, I’ve now just realized I have no clue how valves work on a bike engine.

This is a two stroke so there are no valves!

2 strokes just have ports - typically in the side of the cylinder walls.  They do often have reed valves, which are basically check valves, but thats it.

Looking good! I have always wanted an R5. I’m a sucker for old two strokes. I have a couple single enduros but  always wanted a street one.

Ah-ha! Explains why I couldn’t see any.

Are bike engines usually two-stroke?

2 strokes havent been popular street bikes since the 70s. They were very common in dirt bikes until the late 90s. They are pretty niche now, although KTM has come out with a next gen one thats supposed to be pretty good.

Why is it that every time I see one of these R5 posts I keep wondering why the engine only has two cylinders?

How do you dispose of the diesel after? I’ve found old/contaminated fuel one of the hardest things to dispose of legally, at least when you only have small quantities of it.

Still figuring that one out. Ill use some for bonfire atarting purposes but ten gallons is rather excessive for that. The rest ill take to a hazardous waste facility.

You can also store it for future cleaning needs, I suggest running it through a cheap filter though.

Or even use it as an oil flush for the cars.
