This 204m tall building was once the fourth tallest outside of New York City, and was the tallest one in all of Latin America for a number of years.

Kinja'd!!!

It’s famous for surviving the 57',85', and 17' earthquakes unscathed as buildings -newer and smaller- collapsed around it.

It’s down to the impressive -for the time- foundation, which included a concrete box surround containing the parking levels and 33m deep pylons.

the massive concrete box served both to make the tower “float” on the water-saturated soil where it was constructed, and as the parking levels for this tower.

Kinja'd!!!

It is, however, far from the newest impressive building in the city; which is this skyscraper, Torre Reforma.

Kinja'd!!!

In the background, the Pemex tower is visible, when it was inaugurated it was an impressive building in and of itself.

In order to keep the mansion under it, the construction company built a new movable foundation under the house. It was moved to the other end of the plot to dig the parking levels and the foundation. It was returned to a similar position to where it was before the move. The pylons for Torre Reforma run sixty meters underground, so does the massive Milan wall

The mansion story is wild, who built the 1st tower? The decision to be the 1st to go skyscraper in a city always fascinates me.

It was made for Seguros Latinoamericana in 1947, the building now mostly belongs to Carlos Slim

But just to understand how rich they were... their corporate headquarters were in that same plot! they tore down their old building and moved all of their offices to the adjacent buildings until it was completed.

A big name in civil engineering helped with the design, Nathan Mortimore Newark nonetheless... who also designed the structures for dozens of nuclear plants, and is the father of many building guidelines for areas with heavy seismic activity.

It’s quite remarkable the expertise and skill of the designer to be able to make such an earthquake resistant structure before computer design and a lot of the knowledge gained since it was built.

It is remarkable... but also sort of depressing.

Mexicans shied away from building skyscrapers  and instead we succumbed to urban sprawl... all because of the bro physics behind “if I’m on a house, it’s less likely to fall” Which isn’t that true. We’re catching on lately, but building vertically is harder in seismic areas, and as a consequence more expensive.

We don’t even have the tallest building in the country anymore... that would go to this horrid 280m tall mess in Monterrey:

Very contemporary for 1947, it keeps the massing of prewar Art Deco towers, but is otherwise all modernist glass and steel. Almost a predecessor to 1980s postmodernism.

Modern skyscrapers are either stunning or horrible looking there is no in between.

both towers are awesome.  The first looks like Mies van der Rohe’s take on an Empire State Building.

Architecture can be wildly fantastic or wildly horrible in this country. I think these two buildings subscribe to the former.

The Empire State might be more than twice as tall as this one. We’re yet to build above 9 00 feet. I can’t wait for another super-tall tower to show up.

Clarke’s fourth law: any sufficiently advanced jargon is indistinguishable from satire.

I’m mocking my own ignorance (and reminding myself how incomprehensible I sound to outsiders in my own field).

You know how the JL has BOF construction and a manual, but also has remote start and AppleCarPlay?

It’s sort of the same thing with the tower
