Mine ate a quart every 2-3 fillups on top of the $150 to DIY oil change.

I would imagine. My “little” inline 6 takes 7 quarts.

Coming from always having a sub 2 liter 4 banger, that was a bit shocking. I’m used to 25-30 dollar oil changes.

Our K ia only holds 3.8 quarts.

Considering your bad luck with more modern BMWs and your love of old BMWs, do you think you’ll ever buy a new (or near new) BMW again?

The only one that really calls to me right now is the M2C - an the siren song is strong - but I am hopeful that the new M3 is as good as promised. My kids are only getting bigger; I’ll need a functional back seat for at least another 4 years.

I think my Datsun 240z was 5 qts, but it liked 20W -50 conventional oil.

I’ve learned that oil consumption is a normal and expected part of flying. It’s still somewhat disturbing to be constantly adding oil, but I’ve learned
Lycoming uses a formula to figure out what the burn rate should be:

0.006 x BHP x 4 ÷ 7.4 = Qt./Hr.

The little Lycoming O-320 in the plane I usually fly consumes half a quart per hour. It’s well within spec.

Hard to say. I have driven non M variants of the F and G chassis 3 series and wasn’t impressed (mostly with the steering and mostly with the F chassis). I’m sure I’d like the M3 but don’t know if I could be a buyer.

I definitely like and would consider /am considering an M2C. However, I have put myself in a fantastic, but static car situation. I have the Ranger, the 02, and the E46 M3. I can’t get rid of the M3 because I just can’t...I can’t get rid of the 02 because I just got it, I love it, and I like driving it the most. I could get rid of the ranger but I won’t get much for it and it has a ton of use value, and it’s cheap to maintain.

My wife’s forester does it all, it’s got three pedals so it’s somewhat engaging to drive but that brings us to 4 cars with a single lane driveway and a makeshift garage...

We may be moving in the not too distant future, but for now I’ve surely got to lose one to get one.

We don’t need one, but I really want a car that our daughter can ride in. I have thought many times about following in your footsteps and trading the ranger for a Taco or new Ranger. Then I think “ ok we’ re probably talking $35-$ 40k...has to be more fun than a pickup for that kind of money”.

So to answer your question after all of that, yes I would buy a newer BMW again, but probably only an M2. Unless you’d consider the E90 to be “new” I could see buying another one of with the right set of boxes ticked. I’d love to be able to sell the M3 and pickup an E39 M5, but I just don’t think I can stomach selling the M3.

I definitely wasn’t impressed with the F30 loaner I had.

It’s a very good problem to have 3 cars you really like and don’t want to part with.

We’re at 3 at the moment, but will have 2 additional drivers in 6 short years, so we’ll see what that means for our fleet. I’m getting my shop built this year, and we’re going to widen our driveway, so that opens up some possibilities .

My wife’s MDX will be replaced in the next couple years with something similar. My Tacoma will be in the family for the next couple decades, if all goes according to plan. I still get a lot of enjoyment from my M3, but it’s getting to the point where I either need to invest some serious money to keep it longer term, or find a suitable replacement (and finding a suitable replacement to a track-worthy RWD manual 450 hp sedan with a usable trunk and back seat is no easy task... a Chevy SS may be in my future if the M3 needs to be replaced in the near term). I love the idea of adding a 4th car: a lighter, rawer, more focused fun/track car, but that may still be 5-10 years off. Cayman S and M2C are definitely on the short list. Maybe I’ll be able to swing a GT4 by then, if they actually depreciate some.

This is a steal at this price, fwiw: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2011-bmw-m3-48/ I think light modifications and some interior wear are keeping collector types away. Will be interesting to see where it ends up.

My Focus ST holds approximately 8 qts now.  Factory it is 5.75 qts, a bigger filter nets me another .25 qts.  An oil cooler holds about another qt.  Balance shaft delete allows another qt of oil.  I’ve got plenty and rosella t6 comes in 1 gallon instead of the 5 qt containers so i never have extra which is nice.
