The story on the FP about the Challenger has me thinking again about buying one as my next car, new or used. I go back & forth over manual vs autobox and my question is this - how much harder would it be down the road to sell one with the stick? I typically keep my cars 5-10 years, and while the automatic would have a larger pool of potential buyers does that mean a manual shift Challenger would be much more of a PITA to sell?

Manual will have a built in buyer base. There’s lots of people for whom auto is a hard pass.

especially a car like the Challenger.  Selling a manual Corolla/Camry would be a very different proposition ...

I’ll never stop daydreaming about the 6 speed base R/T Challenger I test drove a few years ago. White, cloth seats, burbly V8...  It was wonderful.

I normally assume a manual used car was better cared for than an automatic, everything else being even.

Depending on the type of car. A manual sports car be much easier sell in 5-10 years as there will still be manual or die people. A manual econo box be rather difficult on the other side.

I usually assume a manual car has been driven hard, but cared for. On the other hand, I assume that automatics have been owned by the apathetic.

I know which one I ’d rather be the second owner of....

I think a car like the Challenger will have a much larger base of buyers for the auto because fo what it is . The manual buyers will be there; but that population will be smaller.

That said, I would say buy what you want to drive and worry about how to sell it when the day comes.

I’ll take it with the tires well done. If you want to throw in a burnt clutch too, I can’t complain.

Just take the bumper guards off please

Of course. I’m selling those on fleabay for the downpayment on the next car. Don’t mind if the trunk if full of wood chips from said tree though..

Don’t worry, you w on’t need a hundred buyers for your used car, just one. Sure, a lot of di ps hit s disabled people with only one leg prospective buyers will be put off by your used Challenger not having a slushy, but other buyers will be searching specifically for a used Challenger with a proper fun-oriented transmission.

Yep, that was my takeaway from most responses .
