Had someone on my project team quit and get a job at a competing firm.
Got a 40% raise in the process. Sure, I’ve got prospects for something decent my self this year, but a 40% raise is just insane. All the power to him, but it does make me question whether even my minor loyalty to my employer is mistaken.

In my experience the best way to get a raise is to have an offer from someone else. Loyalty only goes so far when there’s constant pressure to keep costs down.

Millennials don’t stay in any job past 5-10 years, which makes the market all fucked up. If you stay somewhere more than 5 years, people assume you’re basically unemployable. I’ve switched to jobs where I got a raise, but was responsible for less.

Loyalty to any company is always a mistake.
I speak from personal experience here.

If you can get a 40% raise doing the same job, do it.

Why be loyal? If you’re good, your company typically makes you do more work with the same, or less, pay. Meanwhile you can jump ship and get a raise for doing that work.
I u sually assume the loyal ones are the ones doing the least since they’ve worked out how to stay employed but not work too hard so they feel stressed. Or they’ve worked out that other people will do it for them and neither of our payc hecks change so why rock the boat?

I got into the field I’m in now just under 5 years ago. I stuck with the first employer for about 2 years because they hired me before I had and then payed for me to get a required certification.
I started with my current employer and currently make just under 70% more than I did there. I’m currently working towards the next level of certification, and when I get there I’ll be just under double what I made at the first job. That’s without including getting off of a shitty schedule and getting better benefits.
If you can shop yourself around and improve your life do it. If your employer really values you they’ll counter whatever you’re offered.

Your rewards for shopping around will likely far outweigh any rewards for staying

I was working for a company that gave me a 5% raise every year. I stayed there for 3 years and started to look around other places, I left and got a 80% raise and actually good benefits. Companies don’t care about loyalty anymore it seems, they just want to make sure they get as much work as they can for as cheap as they can. If nothing else, use it as a bargaining chip. If they want you, they will try and match or beat your offer from another place. I have done that. The company offered my $28 an hour, talked to my manager about it, they bumped me to $30 an hour. It doesn;t always work, but doesn’t necessarily hu
rt to try.

I’ve only seen 1-2 cases where company loyalty was rewarded. O ne guy I know at an unnamed tech company - his employee number was 7 (out of like 4 0000 now) and he knew the owner closely - quitting would have looked very bad for him. The company went public and he cashed out 7 figures.
Honestly, it should have been more, considering the ridiculous tasks the owner made him do from time to time, but I don’t feel too bad for him, he got a lot of ad-hoc trips to nice places, was invited to a lot of really nice parties, and got several very good bonuses and good pay structure.
He owns a twin engine plane and bought his parents a house.
On the other side, I’ve seen dozens of coworkers get completely fucked at the same company pay wise for years, only to almost double their salary going somewhere else and have a saner workflow.
Keep in mind that if you are valuable to your industry, you owe it to yourself to keep things fresh and occasionally take a look around. Use glassdoor, paysa, or some other pay sharing tool to see if you’re making even the industry average.
Don’t sell yourself short, I have seen even complete incompetents successfully negotiate for better pay and working positions.
