I’ve got no experience with Bugs, but damned if I’m not in lust with the idea of a Baja Bug recently. Anybody got any advice?

I also know nothing about them, but aren’t they supposed to be dead simple?

The lack of interior photographs worries me.

I say do it, but that’s mostly because I want to see more of it!

A baja bug sounds like the perfect rallycross vehicle...stupid simple and easy to work on that you can drive at the limit on the small scale of a rallycross course

I think that car was at the texas gambler 500.

I want one bad, for that reason.
They’re actually not great at it, they steer like pigs, but still ... they’re awesome! A dude showed up once last year with a baja bug that he stuck a 2.2 ecotech onto the back of. It was pretty amazing!

It’s an excellent idea!
Probably.

They are hard to find for cheap anymore though it seems. I think that guy was there when I went actually (at least someone in a bug was there) but only made one or two runs before having to retire for the day for whatever reason.

Yeah, I think they’re a lot cheaper outside the rust belt. Like all classics it seems.
I remember that bug, the green and white one, right? The one I’m talking about was far from stock. His lasted. I believe he has since turbo’d the ecotec, but he hasn’t come back to rallycross it since then.

Looks like fun! Little overbuilt, but parts availability on these is great. I had a 1973 1600cc dual port in my dune buggy and it was... slow. Check out this book on Amazon . In the “look inside” preview you can read the “How to Buy” chapter. It is super helpful.

You need to see the underneath and inside of the car. Rust is very common on old beetles , and need some serious skills&tools or money to fix it right.
Otherwise as the others say, aftermarket is plentiful and cheap.

Like, I’d agree, but at the same time, bedliner and Amazon’s cheapest racing seats seem like a great plan for one of these too.

My sister had a 64 and a 71 Bajaed out at the same time. The early with the swing axles will wear the outsides of the tires while the later with the IRS will wear the insides but be far more stable. They are slow as hell unless you do major work to the engine, but maintenance is super easy. Except for the axle nut. Bring a pipe for that.

Whoa, I know there are kits to adapt an ecotech onto a VW transaxle , but usually that’s for sand rails.

Someone got an awesome deal.
I could totally see taking that down to Brianne Corn’s place on the weekends and ripping around her property...

The bug in question really was better suited for same, but he wasn't afraid to send it on the Rallycross course.

I can imagine with that 4-cyl hanging waaaay aft of the rear axle, it probably spent most of the time driving sideways.

His biggest problem was keeping the nose down so he could turn. He had to fill his gas tank up to get enough weight over the front to keep it from pushing like a dump truck.
