I was living in London during “The Troubles”, and we had to keep our eyes open there as the IRA was doing regular bombings to put pressure on the UK govt. to leave Northern Ireland. I still have a poster I “borrowed “ from an Underground train advising passengers to keep their bags with them and to report any suspicious bags to LT staff. You got in the habit of not washing your car so you could see the handprints on the boot lid to see if anyone had tampered with it. A favourite tactic of the IRA was to chose a car at random, pop open the boot, place a bomb and take off. 10-15 minutes later......boom.

And now many in the youngest generation who never experienced The Troubles firsthand want it all to come back.

Like the powers that be seemingly wanting to bring back the cold war, like that time coul d somehow be considered the ‘glory days’.  I lived through those days and don’t think anyone should have to live through the fear we had to experience back then. I remember as a geeky child, calculating the duration and span between wars, wondering if I was going to be drafted when I turned 18 and sent off to a needless death. Or wondering when the nukes were going to fall. Not the kind of things that should occupy the mind of a child.

My oldest son is 16. This is not far from my mind. I, too, remember the Cold War. I grew up in Norfolk, VA, home of the world’s largest naval base and no doubt one of the first places that would be nuked. But at least we knew who our enemies were back then.
