To be fair, I knew he would be. (“He” is my F-150.) Also it’s been mostly city driving so it’s not exactly shocking.

I wonder how he’ll do when I take him down to visit my mom next weekend. My goal is to try to get over 20 mpg highway. I don’t know that it’s possible.

By comparison, this is what my work van has gotten the last few fill- ups:

Have I mentioned how bummed I am that I didn’t realize how many OPPOs lived in Denver until after I moved? Although plenty li ve here in Chicago too and I’ve yet to meet a single one so I guess that's on me.

18 MPG, that’s pretty damn good.

My rental F-150 is doing a little better, but most of my driving is highway.

I reset the trip odometer when I rented it.

That’s ok, I’ve still never met any Oppo’s here either.

I’ve gotten over 20 in the ProMaster a couple times. It seems to stay in the 17-19 range most of the time.

This one's got the old 4.6 V8. I don't expect it to be very thrifty, but it might do ok on the highway.

I’ve gotten over 20 I think 3 times in the M3, and by over 20 I mean 20.2 MPG.

Our modest V6 Odyssey does about 15mpg in city driving, 17 mixed. Stretch its legs on the highway  and you can get 26-27 (or 25 with cylinder deactivation delete, which drives much better).

Just saying — there’s no magic cure for large masses stopping and going a lot. These are the vehicles that need electrification or hybridization more than anything.

This is a 2019 with the 5.0.

Also mine has only a 4-speed auto. That’s probably the part that hurts it the most.

I’m pretty sure mine has a billion speeds.

Still blows my mind the Odysseys are that terrible on gas.

For comparison, my 2001 Passat Wagon (V6, Auto, AWD) is just about the same, and it’s 1,000# lighter. Same for just about any 5- or 6-cylinder AWD wagon from that era, before turbos, part-time AWD, and CVTs helped alleviate the penalty (see: Subaru, Volvo, Audi). So all things considered, you give up a couple drive wheels but can carry 2-3x as much.

For comparison, my 1992 Caravan has been averaging 24 mpg in mixed driving and pulls 27 mpg hwy at 70 mph. That’s from a 3.0 V6/3-speed auto. My 94 Voyager averaged 22 mpg in mixed driving with 27" ATs, 2" lift, and a giant basket/bar on the roof from the 3.8L/4-speed combo, and it seems to be doing better with the 3.3L.

It blows my mind that newer vans manage to get worse real world mileage.

It’s the weight. 4,700# empty, or easily 5,500# with the family and a little gear. Plus we live in a really hilly place, so our “mixed” driving might include 2 miles of an uphill grade in 3rd or 4th gear (6AT). You never recover that loss.

Where are they gaining 1500 lbs of weight?

I mean I know modern safety, but many cars have already proven modern safety is kind of a wash when combined with lighter materials, so where the hell are the adding 1500 lbs worth of weight?

Overall size, to start. Even with an aluminum hood and trunk, the Odyssey is just a beast compared to our ‘88 (SWB) Caravan, both length and width. I’m not going to look it up, but guessing it’s about 18" longer and 6" wider.

Dual sliding doors, both with power motors . Power liftgate. A dozen airbags. Tons more beams and reinforcement. Folding/sliding mechanisms in seats. The list could go on...death by a thousand cuts, I suspect.
