It’s pretty bad that they are building a new terminal at the adjacent airport (which was supposed to be dismantled) , which I think may end up opening first. You wonder if Tegel will ever actually close.

They should adopt the English and French model of not fire proofing their buildings.

LOL!
unaware they were building a new terminal at Tegel

we shouldn’t laugh about the grenfell tower blaze.

I wasn’t laughing. W hen the fucking Germans won’t open an airport because it might turn into an oven, yet the English are building apartments for working class people out of matchsticks...something’s gone wrong.

Not at Tegel, they are building at Schönefeld IIRC . That’s not such a waste since it’s still the same airport facility, but it’s definitely not a good sign for the new airport.

Maybe they could just add the runways of Brandenburg to Tegel instead!

It wasn’t built in any such way . It was perfectly fine until some stupid cost cutting idiots wanted to cut corners and not properly examine the new cladding they put on the exterior of the building when they wanted to make the building look newer. As neighbouring tower blocks were complaining how it's dated appearance was a blot on the landscape.
Unfortunately the situation was exacerbated by the old standard practice of being told to wait inside your property until the fire service can get there, only being told to evacuate once the fire had extensively took hold. As the majority of tower block fires spread internally, this one took hold externally and came in.
Unfortunately it’s one of those events you learn from after the fact like aircraft crashes, etc...

Ye’, I watched that one the other day.
It's shocking how a fire system couldn't be gotten working way before now, or even ripped out entirely and a new one put in.

That is a catastrophic fuck-up.
I just came from Singapore and claims about that place being the world’s best airport are true, in my (somewhat) limited experience. I think my next favourite airport is Tokyo Narita.
I’m largely indifferent to European airports, but I’ve only been to Paris/Amsterdam/Madrid/Munich airports . There’s not much memorable about them to me, apart from CDG being an absolute chaotic clusterfuck when I was there last year, really different from what I remember when I first took a trip there about 8-9 years ago (then again, Paris felt different to me, too).
American/Canadian airports can fuck right off though - when you get a good level of service at Asian airports , coming through a US or Canadian hub (say, SFO/ORD/YYZ) is really shocking in terms of worker attitude/ineptitude and overall organization.
These are broad generalizations but SIN/NRT/ICN are top notch in my experience, European ones are somewhere in the mid-upper range, and then there’s a huge gap to the North American hub airports at the bottom of my list.

You haven’t been to Heathrow, have you? It is - by far - the worst major international airport I’ve ever experienced. All of the major US gateways are much better.
I haven’t experienced Asia, but I would put US hubs ahead of the European hubs that I’ve been to - mostly FRA and LHR though.

Dublin was pretty damn nice, but I was there at 3am so I've no clue what the crowd management is like.

I prefer the smaller American international airports like RDU and PVD. They're always way less crowded but just as modern as the big ones.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Dublin, so I can’t comment on that one.
In general, I despise the European practice of having separate security at the gate, which leads them to not open the gate for your flight until the previous flight left the gate. It makes having lounge access of some sort a *must* in Europe - otherwise you’re milling around in the main terminal because of course all of the seats there are taken.
But Heathrow is its own special kind of hell - mostly driven by the fact that it is wayyyyyyy overcapacity. It is literally the only major airport that I know of where holding on arrival is *normal* - often for 30-45 minutes . Transit between terminals is via a shitty, slow, bus service, and you WILL have to change terminals unless London is your destination. I think they’re still short on gates, so many aircraft never actually pull up to the gate - you get on a bus that takes you to the plane.
Some of the terminals are pretty decrepit, too, although at least one (4? I forget) is newer and pretty nice.
The sad part of all that is that I do love British Airways - the onboard service is consistently very good, and planes are kept tidy as well.

I recently moved from the middle east to Germany as part of of my job.
In the middle east, we are used to projects getting delayed because someone cut corners or just didn’t give a shit, since it was government money.
As part of my job i had to fly to Berlin via Tegel Airport (txl) that place hit me so hard i was actually asking my German colleagues “wtf”?
Why is that place looks like a 3rd world country somewhere in the mid 80s?
And then i discovered the story of Brandenburg Airport.
It made me lose hope of German engineers worst then i had with my VW DSG gerbox

I have family that will drive 2-3 hours in the opposite direction to logan, green to avoid jfk/laguradia. It is fascinating that 2 major hubs can have such shitty transportation to/from them to the outlying area.

hartford keeps getting better and better. i really hope and think Aer Lingus is going to have success with their route to Europe due to how much of a cluster it is to get in/out of NYC. There is a rumor anotehr airline wants in for europe fli ghts after Norwegian left.
Westchester is ok.
