Hello, people of Oppo, help me ponder this question; would you get a Kia or a VW?
The Kia in question: The K3 Cerato C’eed Forte HB GT... or so called here.
This Kia comes with a 201hp 1.6 Turbo engine, and a six speed manual transmission, all for 23,600 dollars. Interestingly, on the range-topping model, the GT, gets independent rear suspension... the rest get a torsion bar.
Inspiration animal according to Kia: A Tiger.
ALTERNATIVELY, you could get a homegrown bruiser, the most famous of Mexican cars... the Volkswagen Jetta GLI!
The Jetta is not sold with a manual transmission, but it makes up for it with a 29HP bump over the Kia... Shamefully it does not come in Orange Delight as the Kia does.
The other issue is that the Jetta is 3,000 dollars more expensive. Are 29hp worth the extra expense?
It must be said that the Jetta is a much larger car, the trunk is 25% larger, and it’s 20cm longer than the Kia...but the thing is... Kia loves making heavy-ass cars...which leaves us with the Forte being 70kg* heavier than the Jetta!
Maybe if the price could be ignored, this could be a daily driver head to head!
*: This is according to Kia Mexico’s brochure, Wikipedia’s article on the Forte (the german one interestingly) claims the weight to be 1322KG, as opposed to Kia Mexico’s claimed 1555KG

Kia all day long. While I joke about my Forte, it is an amazing value and I really like their higher end models like the k900 and stinger

mmmmmm id get the GLI tbh. more tuning potential, more aftermarket. more support.

Do I have to?
If so, probably the VW. It’ll probably
have some semblance of resale
value so I can get rid of it as soon as the term of this strange scenario expires.

I didn’t set it up for you to resell it and buy something else, hypothetically... smh.

I mean, the GLI is a mighty car too. I’m just a bit biased to the Kia.

Kia. Way better warranty, less suspect reliability. Didn't you say that Kia dealers are decent in your area too?

The dealers are great... the techs on the other hand... I’m starting to have my doubts. But it’s probably the same at VW, it’s easy to mess up when the same guy has to deal with a Rio/Gol and a Stinger/Artheon under the same roof.
What I mean with that is that, if you mess the alignment by 0.3 degrees on a Rio, the customer doesn’t get angry, but when you mess by that much on a Stinger, they do. Or if you overinflate their tires, or torque the wheel nuts with impact guns .... or leave the car outside the shop, or any other petty complain I wouldn’t be having to deal with in a BMW dealer.

Well I don’t want either!

You could let us know which car you’d get otherwise....

I don’t understand why I like it so much... the interior is pretty nice too.

Off the top of my head, you could probably get a lightly used
WRX for the same 26 grand
as the Jetta (in the states at least, no idea what your market is like for any particular cars
). If it has to be brand-new-off-the-lot for the same budget, I’m not sure. What’s a new MX5 start at?

I think either one would be a fine choice for daily driver duties. I’d probably lean towards the GLI solely because I think it looks better.

Ah, you hit the ultimate answer.
As for a “Lightly used” WRX.... it depends... since it’s not such a common car here, mostly Subaru-geeks get them, so most used WRXs on sale right now are modded, they go from 23k to 32k.

I have a personal issue with Jettas... but yeah, it’s a pretty car. But the rear end on that Kia really looks very good irl.

Kia

Kia!

Kia >> VW
I know VW is popular down there, but their cars suck in terms of reliability
I don’t think Kia sells the 1.6T manual
up here, so you
should get one since you can down there which is onbe of many cool
cars you get that we don’t
:o)

Kia! But not that Kia - that’s particularly ugly even by Kia standards.

Sometimes I wonder if I could sell the Stinger and get a Niro instead, but maybe this would work too. But i’d be losing so much money to depreciation it wouldn’t even be funny.

Boo. I think it’s pretty.

Golf sport wagon.

I’d get the VW because trunk. I don’t get hatchbacks. I’ll take the sedan the vast majority of the time. Also while I haven’t driven this GLI yet, other MQB cars have some sort of voodoo magic going on with the ride/handling balance. They are so much better than competitors in their price bracket . I guess the GT trim of the Forte could be close, but I have to drive it to believe.

I had the SAME discussion yesterday with my dad, except, we were comparing a Pro’Ceed GT (also with the 1.6T) to an A3, albeit the used car market. The VW’s (in our case Audi) keep their value a lot better, but as far as options go and what you get for what you pay for, I’d go for the Kia.
By the time I option out that Audi the same way the Kia is optioned, the Audi will have doubled in price, if not more. Kia for me.

I love the Kia, but I’m surprised by the curb weight.
![]() 04/28/2019 at 02:03 |

Yeah, I do like the HB rear on the Kia. But the front and side angles look pretty uninspired to me.
Like I said, I think either one would make a fine choice.

The GLI seriously can’t have a manual south of the border?!? Where it’s built with manual transmissions for everyone else??? WTF???
The DSG is still good. GLI me, please. Farfignewtons and all that.

VW, assuming the Jetta is closely related to the current Golf.

The front 2/3 isn’t as bad. It just can’t decide if it wants to be a wagon, a sedan, or a blob at the back.

Definitely not another VW. God, I hate these cars.
