!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A bunch of my friends from my old fire department on this one, been there all night.  They’re about to start cutting the bodies out of the wrecks this morning, five confirmed dead at this time.  Super sad.  My best friend is there, been texting me all night, it’s a really horrific scene.  I left firefighting in 2010, and sometimes I miss it, but then I see this stuff and remember how it changed me forever.  Super sad night for Lakewood...

A scene like that has to be just brutal for everyone involved.

That’s horrific. That’s like something you see in a movie and think, that wouldn’t   happen in real life. Prayers go out for the families.

ugh. couple of jobs ago one of the guys who worked for me also was a volunteer firefighter in the evenings. any time he had a run where they had to deal with fatalities he was always “not right” for at least a few days afterward.

don’t know how people can deal with that as a career.

Any chance this was a r unaway diesel engine, or was this guy asleep with the pedal pinned to the floor?

Article says they arrested the driver on vehicular manslaughter charges based on what witnesses told them. Seems kind of weird since they haven’t been able to conduct an investigation yet.

I have friends who were close with An drew Ashcraft, one of the Granite Mountain Hotshots (he was a hardcore kid). I’ve thought about getting into wildland firefighting when not teaching, but knowing how Prescott screwed over his widow and kids makes me think it just isn’t worth it.

That part of I-70 is at the bottom of what is basically a 50 mile downhill from the mountains, we used to run a ton of brake fire calls because inexperienced or incompetent drivers would burn them up riding them down instead of engine braking like a damn grown-up. When I left the fire department and went into haz -mat response, we cleaned up a lot of fatal wrecks further up into the hills from the same stuff. I’d say at this point that it could be that or sleeping/drugs, etc.

They likely charged and arrested the dud e because he’s here illegally, or otherwise a flight risk. It’s easy to drop the charges after the investigation if need be and let him go, not easy to nail him if he leaves town....

Yeah, it definitely leaves a mark man.  Suicide is an real issue in the fire service right now, PTSD is no joke.  Luckily, the fire service has been very pro-active about addressing this stuff for years, so there’s a lot of resources to help guys get through this stuff.  A lot of us old school guys never took advantage of it though, didn’t want to be seen as weak.  Stupid is more like it.  I still have nightmares, sometimes a smell or a sound will get me super anxious and shaky.  It’s definitely not a job for everybody.
