Kinja'd!!!

I am grumpy. An attorney I hired a little over 90 days ago is leaving for another firm. That is fine, and part of the deal. The part that isn’t fine is the 3 business days notice I was given. Very unprofessional, and surprisingly antagonistic for someone I have been nice and generous to. For example, she missed time when her daughter had a baby and I paid her for her missed days even though she had no sick leave. I would have appreciated a little more consideration on her way out the door. When I interview people, I ask how soon they can start, and I wouldn’t hire someone who told me they felt no need to give reasonable notice to their employer.

At this point, I’d like her out of my office ASAP, but my senior lawyer needs a couple of things from her. Grr....

That’s ridiculous from an alleged professional.

Probably not a long term fit with that attitude anyways, but short term pain.

That’s very unprofessional.  Last job I left I gave them over a months notice because I knew for a fact that they were really bad about training people (one of my complaints and why I left) so I wanted to make sure they had time to assign someone to me for a good turnover since I had a lot of ongoing projects.  Typical - they give me someone a week before I leave.  Oh well, I tried.

I’d throw her out and help the senior guy myself. Neither her head nor heart will be there these next 3 days and she clearly cannot be trusted.

Disappointing...I found out I botched my job interview and despite my leadership fighting for me the company isn’t keeping me on. Sigh...

That seems really unprofessional indeed. Those 14 day minimums are there for a reason, and in a lot of fields you probably should be giving significantly more notice than that as a professional courtesy to your employer and coworkers.

That sucks. And frankly seems absurd, interviews are a pretty terrible way to determine if someone will be a good employee, we only use them because hiring someone for a few months to try them out is an expensive way to learn if someone is a good fit. Using an interview to evaluate an employee you already know is ridiculously foolish. Maybe it is just an excuse to get rid of someone, but that’s an indication that they’ve done a very poor job communicating about your performance thus far.

It is their process and I didn’t make it. Eh...I liked it here and they saved me from my nonsense in Maryland.

Let me preface this with the fact that I don’t know you from Adam, and I do not know how you are as an employer.

W here I work, if you put in 2 weeks notice you usually get fired that day. Perhaps she felt for some reason that would have been the case? You mention she has a family, maybe that was a motivating factor?

But I do agree, not giving notice is quite rude and very unprofessional.

3 days is very unprofessional. It makes me wonder what the new job might have said to encourage that sort of behavior. The last time I switched jobs, I told the new place that I wanted to give my old place a month's notice and they didn't object.

You can hire me. I will have absolutely no idea what I’m doing and be a detriment to work operations,   but I can also be there every day.

I’ve noticed this happening more and more frequently, people not giving sufficient notice. Some have even said they never knew about the two week professional courtesy rule. Typically it's been people in their 20's. I just don't get it. Oh well, none of them were people I would've like to keep on anyways.

So sue her...;)

In her defence she might of been offered her dream job with little notice.

Maybe she was scared to disappoint you, and had trouble building the courage to tell you.

That and accepting a place at a rival company normally means when you quit it is immediate.

Or she might just be a bad person, and was fedup about constantly hearing you talk about cars, vespas and sunchaser.

Lawyer here. I think legal employment requires substantially more notice to comply with the ethical rules (at least in my state) about notifying all clients and obtaining a client election to stay with firm or not. That said, a person who left (I suppose who I replaced) wh ere I work now did not give much notice (roughly 1 week), whereas I gave 1 month.

I would never give someone less than 2 weeks. That number keeps going up with the complexity of handover. 3 day notice is crazy, that’s service-industry BS. Good riddance.

That is really a shame. Anything less than a week is a bit unreasonable. Anything where you carry a lot of work on your shoulders, you should give more time to be able to off load your work and get the office ready for you to leave.

I have zero experience, but I’ll apply for attorney .

Sorry to hear this. Hopefully you can have a blast of a weekend to get your mind off this! :) And more, hopefully the person who replaces her is even better.

I was totally going to ask if  I could replace her, then I realized that she’s a lawyer... and I’m very much not. lol

Over here in Illinois, there’s an even worse practice that happens in Chicago tech: Ghosting.

Basically you get hired at a new employer, don’t tell your old employer, stop showing up at your old work, then try to go as long as you can collecting paychecks from your previous employer before they finally fire you. I’ve heard of people who have actually gone as far as stringing their old employer along for a few months. *smh*
