Why is it that when I go to bed slightly early, I wake up *really* early?

I had a headache last night so I went to bed around 11:30, which is about an hour or so before I normally go to bed. I woke up around 4am and couldn’t fall back asleep. It’s now 5:20am and I feel ready to get up and start my day.

This seems to happen a ny time I feel exceptionally tired an hour or two before my bedtime and I decide to go to bed. What gives?

We tend sleep in blocks of maybe 3 to 4 hours, and if you wake up at the end of one of these cycles you’re ready to go. It’s when your alarm goes off in the middle of one that it’s so hard to wake up. My son had to get up at 4 this morning to get to the airport for a band trip. I’m trying to decide whether or not to go back to bed for an hour or just stay up.

I’ve forgotten the exact time frame for this, but one thing that works really well, is to drink a cup of coffee or energy drink, and then take a 20-40 minute nap. If you get the timing right, you wake up feeling like you got a full 8 hours of sleep.
