But now? I mean, it’s not a terrible idea. If it isn’t a typo on their website, Jeep is leasing base model Gladiators for $143/month. $3,500 down, 10k miles/year, 24 month term. Not unreasonable numbers at all. Plus I would probably trade the Cube in, knocking at least $1,500 or so off that down payment.
So, what does Oppo think? I don’t really need a truck in any major sense. But I suspect it would be a fully reasonable daily driver until about the 3rd or 4th time I have to fill it with gas. As for color, I actually don’t mind the orange, although I would probably go for the Sting Grey or Gator colors instead.

Wowwwwww. I’ve never seriously considered leasing, but that would be quite interesting. I’d still have my Wrangler to keep the mileage down.

Right? I’ve never leased before. But for something I’ll probably be tired of in two years, it’s really not a bad way to go.

10k miles a year?? How much do they charge you for overages? I drive maybe 30k a year at least , I guess if you want your FCA product to last more than 5 years you should limit yourself to 10k a year

So basically you’re spending $7,000 to rent a truck for two years. About $10/day.

The sad thing is it would be a significant upgrade for me, fuel mileage-wise.

I thought about it, but I don’t put on that many miles, so it isn’t a huge concern.
I got my Cube eight years ago, and I’ve averaged about 9,5 00 miles per year. However, that includes moving from Florida to northern California, multiple cross-state drives, and it being my only vehicle for seven of those years. If it really came down to it, I could certainly daily the Corvette for a couple months (for reference, I put only about 7,0 00 miles on the Cube in the first year after buying the C5).

Pretty much. It’s a gamble to be sure. Purchasing the same truck with the same down payment would put me at $588/month. That’s just over $14,000 for two years, hoping that depreciation doesn’t kill me.

I was thinking of picking up a beater pickup, but that price seems like it might be worth looking at.
Wouldn’t get a lot of miles put on it, light towing and hauling so that’s an interesting damn thought.
Although this is where leasing gets me - I pay $7k for two years then have to give it back! I could almost buy a 10 year old Taco for that which will live a lot longer than this guy for that.

Have you seen the resale value of Wranglers?? Jeep is
counting
on the Gladiator maintaining huge resale value by offering these lease terms. They’re betting that a 2 year old, 20k mile Gladiator will still be worth more than $MSRP -
7
000.

Yeah, that’s certainly true. But at a certain level, it’s worth it to not really have to worry about anything on my daily driver. The monthly payment (in terms of purchasing/financing) is enough for me to laugh and forget about it entirely. But for less than $150/month? That’s less than half of one day’s work. I can justify that.

Well sure, they wouldn’t offer it if they knew it would be a money-losing venture. But I’ve bought new cars before, and it’s not unreasonable to see a depreciation of more than $7,000 after two years. Hell, plenty of BMW’s will drop that in less than a year.
And yeah, a lease is effectively a rental. But like a rental, it can serve it’s purpose for the terms of the lease, then I can be rid of it without having to try and sell it when I’m done with it. I’ve owned somewhere in the vicinity of 30 vehicles in the nearly 20 years since getting my license. Excluding my Cube, I’ve never kept anything for more than 3 years (most being kept for 18-24 months) . Only a select few of my purchases didn’t result in a financial loss to some extent.

Quite possibly. I’ll ponder it for a couple more days, then if it’s still on the website by Monday, I might swing by the local CJDR dealer and see what they say.
Odds are, even if it is legit, they’re going to say they have no base models with manual transmissions, or some such nonsense.

If it is legit, I’d grab it if you can live with the mileage limit.

Yeah, that looks like it’s missing a zero, but it’s got an extra opportunity!
Dell once had a typo on its Mexican website, it was forced by the CFPB to sell Alienware computers for 500 bucks after it canceled the typo-ed orders.
So, I say try your luck.

Not a typo. Just hide residual value. Which also means it would be a very good buy if you had the means to pay it off quickly.

If for some reason, I lease it and decide my life is incomplete without it, I suppose I could always just buy it out towards the end of my lease.
I’d have no problem paying the monthly rate for financing it. But I have a harder time justifying $600/month for something with more than 2 doors and less than 8 cylinders at this point in my life.

Bmw ain’t Jeep on resale. Not even close. Jeep (and others, notably subarus and toyota 4x4s) are often a ‘better buy’ new due to ridiculously high resale.

89% residual value is what I just read about these a day or two ago, for the Sport model. Drops down to 77% for Rubicon.

I wouldn’t put money down on a lease. I know they advertise these $3500-4 down to get the payment lower, but it’s smarter to take the higher payment with not putting any down. You don’t get that money back like on a loan if your car gets totaled.

Jeeps (at least the Wrangler) are al ways worth buying new over used. They just don't depreciate like a car should. Although you might want to check out what a base Gladiator comes with, because if it's anythink like a Wrangler it probably has crank windows, manual locks and no AC.

FWIW, I use a Ram 1500 with the 3.6/8speed for work , and even after hopping out of a 3100lb, 405hp car it feels great. It’s a fantastic engine/trans combo. I’d honestly have trouble deciding between the Hemi and the 3.6 if I were getting a Ram.

The base does indeed have manual windows and locks, but A/C is standard. Totally fine by me. The key fobs on the Cube stopped working two years ago and I never bothered getting them fixed. So I’m okay having to turn a key if needed. And I’m not feeble enough (yet) to have trouble with window cranks.

Yeah, that’s acceptable . I can live without any of the modern features except AC; living in California, I would die without it.

Same here. We’ve already hit 90 degrees here in Sacramento this week. No A/C would be a killer.
