I’ve been making some preliminary route maps for the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It’s not too late to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! if you want to come. I’m thinking that I will probably take a long weekend and pre-drive the routes to make sure none of the roads are too rough. The data so far says that long weekend and goodie bags are a go! August is winning for a date.
Personally, I’m trying to figure out if the Exocet will be my chariot.

I might actually try to do one of these “social things”. I have enough work in bay area I can just extend the trip. Not sure about direction. There are fewer people south of SF once past San Jose but the country north is much nicer to look at.

I am certainly excited for this. I am curious about the write in road info

I think if it went south it might be more tempting for more oppos. Driving t
hough SF is a major pain.

One I always wanted to do, but never got around to:

Personally I’d rather drive through SF to hit roads north of that since that is an area I don’t ever get to explore.

I have a friend that has driven a lot of that. He says it is amazing.

They build the roads by the corner up there. Worst mistake I ever made was driving my Isuzu pickup to Fort Bragg
. Def. Miata or similar territory. I would have a rental car
.
The lost coast is an amazing drive. I think Oppo would like it.

I agree about it being more tempting just because it seems more people will be coming from the south. Driving through SF is a relative breeze compared to, say LA on the way to San Diego. The roads up north are *way* better, though.

I’ve driven almost all of CA-49. Just not at once. I grew up in Placerville.

Yeah there are some great sections in there.

The only issue with the lost coast drive is how rutted the road is compared to the other option - veering east over 36.

Oh don’t worry. I’ve currently got the starting point just northeast of San Jose, hitting all the good east bay roads on the way up to good stuff around the Napa area. There’s a little highway transiting to get from the East Bay to North bay, but I think in total it’s about 25 minutes - which is nothing compared to the 4.5 hours of curves.

I drove it last in 2005 in a subaru impreza, it was a bit bumpy coming out of ferndale but otherwise not bad. Yeah a state highway is gong to be much better. There is also a glaring lack of services on the lost coast, like nothing...

Yeah, no one has repaved in the last 14 years. It’s that or worse now. If I took my Lancer, it would be fine. It would shatter my teeth in the Miata or Exocet.

Yeah, I’ve currently got the loop starting in San Jose area and looping back down on the 3rd day down the PCH, so you end fairly close to where it started.

plus driving over the golden gate bridge is a real treat, I wouldnt mind doing it when traffic is lighter. Its just a neat bridge to drive on and then like you said, the roads past there are awesome and I have only been around there once anyways.

So a Hyundai

The ultimate car for that would be a rally 911.

If we are starting in the San Jose area, I think I will definitely make my drive from LA go up the PCH and then do the Big Basin Redwood forest roads - 9, 236, 35, 17. Some really cool stuff in there and worth checking out while “in the neighborhood”.

Current starting place is Castro Valley, CA, so plenty to do en-route :)

If you’re serious about doing highway 29 over Mt. St. Helena and it isn’t all on fire and depending on where you’re planning to cut west and depending on how many people are coming and depending on when it is I might maybe have access to extremely pleasant accommodations near Clear Lake at very low cost . If all of those “ifs” line up in your plan, you can email me at the address I provided on the sign up form.

Funny you say that, I was looking at Middletown-ish through Clearlake area as a stopover. Will send you an email a bit later!

Just not the immediate bay area roads. The 405 is so much nicer than the 880 or 580.

The road through Petrolia got hammered the last few winters, I used to live at the very beginning and did the trip a few times a year

I nterested in seeing some of the route options. If the lost coast highway is on there I have an alternative (slightly less bumpy) less traveled route that will dump you onto hwy 36.
Take Alderpoint rd from Garberville out into Zenia Bluff Rd which will leave you a little ways out 36.(garberville being basically the same start point as the lost coast trip which starts on Briceland rd in redway)

What’s a reasonable amount of driving per day? In my mind, it’s about 5 hours. Alderpoint would be super cool but if we go that far, Avenue of the Giants is kind of a must - which is a lot of miles. I’m working up a whole bunch of route options though and will send out a high-medium-low. Obviously the more miles, the more roads :)

Doing around the 20,000 miles a year I might be the wrong person to ask.
Id be looking to do as much driving as possible so say between 6 & 8hrs. But it’s all together possible I’ll just tag along for a large portion of the journey.(meet in the bay follow everybody up north and return home)

Sorry, w hat’s this in response to? When I said the roads up north are way better, I meant the roads immediately north of the bay area are better than the ones immediately south of it. Not talking about freeways, either. 280 is by far the best one in the bay area.

YES. My father in law has a cabin in Midpines, I want to use it as a launchpad for a big drive trip. I’ve done 49 from Mariposa to Nevada City (then 20 from there and down to Washington for fun, that road is proper ) and loved every minute of it. May do it again in July.

My August schedule may have just gotten thrown out the window. T he vacation day I planned for another little trip was secretly not available at work, but I’ll look forward to whatever you come up with and hope to make it. Monterey Car Week(end) will probably claim a few of us as well.

Yes there is definitely some interest. At worst, I'll show up lol. Perhaps shooting for the 3+ day thing scares some people off. I know for me that is definitely tougher but I'd go regardless. Perhaps adjusting to a shorter event could be more palatable? Just try to pick a date that Capt Dale can make it up to and then we've got three. Also Tfritch would be a good Oppo to coordinate with. And if you need help with planning, I'm glad to assist. I don't know much about anything North of Monterey though lol.
