The Russian news organization Baza has produced a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! detailing how one !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! accidentally shot down another in 2017.
Two MiG-31s in flight
The two interceptors were engaging a target drone when the wing-man accidentally targeted the lead plane instead. Due to a fault in the IFF system, the MiG’s backseater did not realize the error, and two live

(NATO calls them AA-9 Amos) were launched. Apparently the other MiG’s RWR was working, as they were able to eject before the airplane was destroyed.

The crew of the targeted MiG survived, and the crew of the targeting MiG was found to have committed a “violation of safety measures and missions for flight, expressed in the premature activation of the aircraft’s on-board radar station by the navigator and the unauthorized launch of the R-33 guided missiles by the commander,”

The firing Russian jet discovered a small Russian-speaking population inside the other jet, and followed its instincts.

It’s not like they are any older than the F-15 and F-16.

Yeah, the Foxhounds were manufactured between ‘75 and ‘94, so they’re low hours. The Russians have also been keeping them current, if not exactly reliable.. .

They are contemporaries with our 4th gen fighters, so it doesn’t seem terribly shocking.

Well. You're the backseat guy, eyes on your screen, which is telling you it's locked on to the target, not to a wingman. So isn't the real stupidity on the part of the engineers?

More so on the maintenance crew. The Russians have IFF, same as everyone else, but it failed to prevent the lock-on in this case.
