I’ve had my summers on all season. Am I doing this right?

I’ll be putting mine on tomorrow while I get an alignment.

I’m back to jonesin bad for a Yugo and now for a Buell as well. I have no idea why I want a Yugo so much right now...but I’m somewhat glad pretty much everyone is asking total crack pipe prices for them.

I put mine on last week. It’s nice to be able to corner again.

Remember, if you a buy Yugo, it’ll very quickly go from a “ha ha” purchase to an “oh gods” purchase.

Odd question: is there much of a tire  selection for wheelchairs? Like, can you get different wear ratings or tread selection based on where you use it?

I was gonna get new tires before the cruise, but by the end of this week I’m  going to have spent nearly $1k on medical bills for Ravna over the last two weeks, with possibly another $3k on the way.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yikes, that’s expensive.

I was looking at new tires, and it’d be about $750 for AS/3s. I probably won’t need a new set before I sell the car, and these tires work fine.

Yes. You can go from thin slicks all the way up to wide knobbies for trail use if you’re an outdoor adventurer. It’s similar to the options for bikes.

The ones I have on now have a narrow strip of slick rubber at the center apex section that is formulated to leave less residue on indoor floor surfaces (my wife likes this in our house) with a light herringbone pattern to the sides (the blue part) . I’ve had wider ones with a more aggressive tread that are good for off-roading stuff like gardening or going to the barn. But it’s not really simple to change tires all the time. It’s like changing any bike tire. People who toggle back and forth just keep alternate wheel sets or even alternate chairs set up for normal or off road.

All the various “E9X” commenters seem to be located from MS to SC. I often confuse them because -- don’t call me a bigot -- so many BMWs look the same.

Going to the Jefferson swap meet Friday, hopefully find tires for the car and new “rally” lights for the van.

Got some more wiring to redo on the van as I found another bad plug last night.

Otherwise things are well.

Nice to hear -- we’re thinking about Chattanooga, Nashville, or Greenville at the moment. Places big enough to have a decent sized community, but without the sprawl and crowds of Atlanta or Charlotte (but close enough to visit them!)

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > facw
04/23/2019 at 16:55

Kinja'd!!!1

Yes.

You can use any bike tire that will fit. In practice though, the diameters are different than most bike tires such that you end up buying from dealers of wheelchair tires rather than Nashbar or your local bike shop . For instance, you almost never see 700C w/c tires (the most common road bike size) on chairs . I did have a set of 26" wheels, which you will see on bikes. So, in that case, I could use bike tires if they are the right width. Most light weight  chair wheels are 24" and so not common on adult bikes. They are more seen on kid bikes, but then they tend to be too wide for a common w/c rim. So again, you end up buying from w/c vendors.

Haha! Those wheels would be writing checks my arms couldn’t cash. :)

I have this fear of expensive  carbon rims on my daily. I’d be worried I’d crack them under the abuse.

New modern carbon is stronger than current aluminum rims. Frankly I’m surprised the spinergi es are still in one piece unless you “know a guy” who has a bunch of those fiber spokes and is good at replacing them. My old bike shop buddy used to build wheels for his dads chair and he would use mavic open pro rims and custom chair specific hubs. I can see where a bit of compliance would be good tho.

Kinja'd!!! Chariotoflove > Highlander-Datsuns are Forever
04/23/2019 at 17:20

Kinja'd!!!1

Well I admit it’s a bit of an irrational fear. Also, the expense is daunting.

I’ve beaten on my wheels, but never broken a spoke.  They’re pretty solid. Yes, the compliance is a good thing, since I don’t have any kind of suspension.  For my new chair, the RT (who also uses a chair) tried to convince me I want a suspension.  I flat refused because minimal weight is far more important to me.

Kinja'd!!! Highlander-Datsuns are Forever > Chariotoflove

Kinja'd!!!0

You are not going to find a more compliant wheel than a 12 spoke fiber wheel. Suspension, I guess it depends on how hard you send it. I watched a dude last week assemble his chair right outside of his car so I can only imagine that minimal weight for transport and handling is very desirable. So titanium frame and carbon wheels?

Hard to say. She has a lot of stuff her lungs. We’re working under the assumption that it’s pneumonia; she’s in the middle of a weeklong antibiotics regimen to see if that will clear them up a bit. She goes back in for another set of X-Rays on Thursday morning.

Titanium frame yes. I do a lot of lifting and moving the thing around.

The big barrier to carbon wheels is still expense, even if they are strong. As of now, I can still get insurance to pay for Spinergy on aluminum rims .

That’s a pretty accurate assessment of Greenville, it seems to have most of the amenities of ATL without the population and traffic.

We got confirmation from the radiologist today that her pneumonia is responding to the antibiotics. There’s still a bit of stuff left that may be the rest of the infection, may be inflammation from the infection, or may be scarring. We’re extending the course for another ten days to be sure (she’s done seven so far). Already, though, she hasn’t coughed at all yesterday or today, though she still gets winded pretty easily.
