oh. Not something we need much on the west coast.

Everything is OK until the ocean comes to us, we have an earthquake or we burn

Yeah, I’d rather not be remembered as the asshole dad who didn’t buy a storm shelter for his kids.

Here’s some data:

Lipo bags are nothing new, but that one intrigues me a bit. I get containing fire and explosions, easy enough, but how does it deal with smoke and carcinogens? Unfortunately the video was little more than fear mongering with no explanation of how their product functions.

If it’s completely sealed and airtight, I imagine it must be capable of expanding many times it’s size before rupturing.. or something.

True story, on my last flight I had ~400 watt/hr of Lithium ion battery with me in my backpack. I was complying with all the regs though, none over 100 watt/hr and no more than 2 spares/device. I was actually a very good boy and asked if they were going to gate check my bag so I could know to remove the batteries before they put them underneath the plane.

As far as I know, most flight departments plan to throw the battery and bag out of the window. So heads up.

Any airline has a laptop battery runaway plan/procedure. Most have a containment kit related to that style if not all by now. At least my airline does. A laptop battery runaway is quite impressive to see! Only real way to stop it is to cool it down but in how it could cause it to burst.

B iggest problem I see there is that their presumably over $3k bag is larger than the window... and that’s before it expands to the size of the cockpit.

If the pack has already gone thermal, what’s the plan for getting it into the bag at that point? Serious question, because from what I’ve seen there often isn’t a lot of time between “hey, that’s getting warm” to “holy fireball batman”

In all the years I lived in Oklahoma, we only used a shelter once. It was down the street at my great-grandparent’s house. We were at my grandparents house at the time (they lived three doors down) and we made a run for it. I remember my grandfather getting hit by hail just as we ducked under the carport. We took shelter in the hole as the sirens went off, but the tornado missed our street.

It wasn’t until we moved to Louisiana that something I owned suffered tornado damage. We were lucky and the damage was minor. Five houses on the street were significantly damaged, one by a tree falling on it, two directly hit by the tornado, and the other two by strong winds adjacent to the tornado. I had to replace our fences, all the siding on the back of the house, some of the trim work, the columns supporting the roof over the back porch, and my garage door. The wind pressurized the attic space, escaped through the attic access which I had left open, and tried to leave via the garage door. It looked like the hulk had been trapped inside and beat on the door to get out.

It took a year to get all of the damage sorted out. We couldn’t get a contractor to come out and give us an estimate, so I learned how to replace a garage door, hang siding, and bend aluminum to shape for all the trim work. In the end, I learned a lot, but my wife would have rather paid someone to get it done more quickly.

One of the items on my pre- flight is to make sure there’s a fire extinguisher on- board. As we went through the checklist this past weekend, my instructor thought to look at the expiration date. I never thought an extinguisher expiring, but sure enough, it’s several years out of date. :O

Looks like they’ll replace them if they’re ever deployed*

We tried, for a year , to get someone to come out and do the work. Me doing the repairs was a last resort.

That’s crazy.

Seems like Mike Rowe is right - if a kid has any inkling to do so, point them toward a trade school or apprenticeship.

Mike Rowe is right. I could rant about the education system and the devaluation of trades for hours. The issue was the amount of repair work going on in the Baton Rouge area (there were floods around the same time) and the small amount of repair work to be done on our house. I ended up fixing both my house and the small amount of trim work that needed repair on my next-door neighbor’s house.

Egads. Do they come with a full face blast shield as well?

I’ve seen a bunch of thermal runaway videos and things often seem to go from zero to bigly fireball rather quickly.

If only one cell in a pack pops a person might be able to glove up and bag it before the rest take off, but even then I wouldn’t want to be holding the pack if the other cells decide to suddenly vent. Desperate times and desperate measures though, I guess.
