Let's face it. When the computer says no...fuel injection is fucked. And yes there's mechanical fuel injection but that was a sadomasochistic exercise. As were Stromberg carbies....

I have heard it in terms of simplicity. Alot of old guys know the ins and outs of Carbs. But fuel injection to them is a whole nother beast.

Everytime they’re car breaks down they always come back with, “ there are too many electronics on this” “I dont even know where to start” “I could have fixed it if it was a 440 six pack”.

Not the fact the car has over 200K and runs like a top but something like a fuel pump goes out and all you here is “well on my 318 the fuel pump was on the front”

No fucking shit, and your 318 probably did make it past 50K before it needed rebuilt because it was shit.

Considering it’s essentially the same 318 whether it had a carburator or fuel injection, I don’t know what you’re getting at here.

I have yet to test it, but I believe that carbs could theoretically have better throttle response than EFI.

On a throttle by wire EFI system, the throttle pedal is just another sensor, and the computer must react to the new throttle position before moving the throttle plate and adding fuel. (I know it’s supposed to be milliseconds, but I have noticed this delay.)

On a cable throttle EFI system, the throttle pedal acts directly on the throttle plate, but the computer still must react to the input of the throttle sensor before adding more fuel.

On a carb, the throttle pedal is directly connected to both the throttle plates and an accelerator pump to push fuel into the venturies as the throttle plates are being opened. A properly set up carb will dump in the appropriate amount at the appropriate rate to make the engine react as the pedal is being pressed.

Though I know from experience that getting a carb tuned “properly” to allow this is a huge pain in the ass, and can be borderline impossible for an amatuer like me.  Personally, I like the cable throttle EFI system, it’s still extremely quick, and requires far less fiddling to get it to run right.

I’m actually pretty impressed when I consider that people used to get forced induction and carburetors to work together. No widebands, no dynos, no electronic timing or fuel controls, yet they made it work. Compare to modern times where one data point is out of whack and you grenade the thing, it makes you wonder how the hell they did it the old fashioned way.
