While I was parked downtown working this afternoon, someone slashed my soft door window and stole my prescription sunglasses.

First time any real financial damage was done by a thief despite years of driving naked or with a soft top. Pisses me off, but I should be grateful it’s so unusual for me.

Do you leave your doors unlocked? I’ve had multiple jeep with soft top drivers tell me that’s what they do.

Yeah, but they’re very difficult to open. Most of the summer I just leave them off entirely; I considered removing them today.

Does that gen not have a locking center consul and glove box? I lock all my stuff up even with the hardtop on.

I was loaded up for camping the other day and had some tweekers at a park scoping out  my stuff. I made it known to them they’d be burried in that park if they tried to take my shit.

It does, but I don’t have enough room for sunglasses in there with all of the other things I keep , and I don’t like to lock up anything that I might need while I’m driving.

Was the door locked? It's why I don't like locking my Miata. I've been tempted to put a sign on the window that says DOOR UNLOCKED, DONT CUT TOP. But then again I'd rather replace my tan top with a black one so I kind of want an excuse lol.

Unlocked but quite difficult to open.

I never leave anything in the cabin worth more than the cost to replace a window of my vehicles, and they’re always unlocked.

Thar sucks. The top on my BMW got slashed when I lived in the city - just pure vandalism. I duct taped it for a lo ng time before I replaced it.

Sorry to hear it.

My brother had his windshield destroyed once over a $20 Walmart radar detector. $500 deductible and the defroster spewed shards for years after the repair.

Sucks, man. People are savages!

That sucks, he basically just stole the glasses out of spite for not having anything inside he could pawn for drug money.

My mom has an NA Miata, and she either keeps her hardtop on, or leaves the softtop down, always. It's shitty that we can't just have nice things.

The thief may not even have realized the sunglasses were prescription. That’ll be a fun surprise.

That sucks. But the fact that this is one of our major cities where you can still have a run of 5 years like that is one of the reasons I’d like to move back someday.

Also, your prescription glasses are probably in a trash can or on the side of the road somewhere within a half mile radius.  Lovely.

Unless you have a tuffy or equivalent, it isn’t going to help much. They slashed the top to get in, they’ll just bust the latches on the console or glove box. If you’ve ever seen a tj’ s latches, you’ll know they are not exactly robust.

This. At the mi ata shop we recommend to everyone forgetting their Miata had door locks unless the hardtop was on.  A thief could steal everything inside a Miata including the airbags and it would cost less than replacing a slashed top.

Someone slashed / shattered my rear plastic zip insert on my o7' on a nice balmy -37C night while I was working... I picked up the pieces and brought them inside to warm up and then taped them all back together. Held together for years. Could barely tell.

Whenever we took my Jeep to Vancouver I always left the doors unlocked with the windows rolled down with an open glovebox with nothing in it. VERY obvious that there was no reason to enter it. I’d stash all the manuals and stuff in the rear storage cubby that the tailgate overlaps.

And if it didn’t look too rainy I’d remove the side and rear panels too.

People who steal stuff out of cars are only going to take the time to break in if they can see something they want.

Keeping stuff out of sight does wonders for security.
