Spent 5 1/2 hours Friday lubing the slide pins on the BMW’s calipers. I’ve never done any brake work before, this was easy and rather straight forward. while the rotors, pads, and calipers are rusty none of the bolts were seized.
Rear Right
The worst bit of rust on the car. The bottom mudflap screws are secured in metal that’s rusted away from the body.
The design of the Girling front calipers was easy to pull apart compared to the rear calipers which were more fiddly and had less room to work around.

These swaybar bushings look bad. I might have to think about refreshing the suspensions rubber bits.

Should I be worried about the rust in the piston cavity?

After finishing the front I noticed that the jack-stand sunk into the asphalt on the sunny side of the car.

Rear Left
I don’t know what this loop is for but it wouldn’t even hold the weight of the bungee cord, let alone the brake caliper.
Rear Left Pads - evenly worn - but both rear slide pins were completely dry.
That’s how I spent my Friday. I think I’ll just run the calipers, pads, and rotors as is, for the BC trip next month. What do you think of that idea?

One thing I would check out is the condition of the lines. Also keep note of how old the flex lines are.
Seeing your previous post, that interior is so clean!

I see no issue with running those pads and rotors as long as they aren’t warped. As for the condition of the brake lines / flex lines, a visual inspection is about as much as you can do. Scaly rust on the steel lines or cracking on the rubber lines

Coated rotors are awesome! And they also make coated calipers, too. Napa Eclipse is a good choice for the calipers. The best rotors to get are Wagner E-coated (part number ending in E) or Centric Premium

Hmm i know the rear flex hoses are good as I did them when I had the trailing arms replaced, but I’ll have to check the hard lines. the front flex hoses felt good (supple rubber feel and they wern’t even dirty).

Ya IF I was going to replace the rotors I’d definitely get the e-coated ones.

I wasn’t sure if that was just some oxidation or full rust on the line. This spring I’ve been knocking off a bunch of maintence items and thought, “ these aren’t that old” (flips through receipts) “shit they are that old”

Its difficult to make a call on surface rust from a photo, but it’s not usually an issue on the dry side of the piston. If you see pitting
that is measurably deep, replace.
