Well, it seems I could only squeeze 80k miles out of the rear main seal. To Chrysler’s credit, they’ve only been making this engine for thirty years, so they may need some more time to figure out how to make a proper seal. On a positive note , the pilot bearing also seems to have a similar lifespan, so I’ll only have to pull the transmission once every 80k miles! My wife has a 120k mile BMW that is leak free. Way to go Chrysler! It’s currently 97F, so I better swap these puppies out sooner rather than later.

How long did it take Chevy to fix the RMS on the small block? 30 years. Yeah.

Wait, they fixed it? Did somebody tell them they fixed it? Did they tell them to use the revised part?

Ok, fixed might be an overstatement but the one-piece is a definite improvement on the two-piece. Add that to changing from perimeter to center bolts on the valve covers and you might be able to park a small block in your garage without putting cardboard under it.

I have a leaky one of those too! Was gonna fix it when I had the tranny out, but the old timers told me to leave it as it’ll just leak again.
However, c ompared to my old Corvair, the seals on my 350 are great!

The extra oil under the car acts as
a
rust preventative measure
. They designed it that way.

I actually developed a bunch of surface rust all over my front axle. On a truck that has spent its entire life in Phoenix...
Fucking Chrysler.

Maybe do the clutch whilst you’re at it. I’d be tempted, certainly to inspect it.

My TOB is almost toast, so I’ll definitely do the clutch at the same time.

80,000 miles is a long time.
And give the engine mounts a close look at the same time.
