Kinja'd!!!

Pic yoinked from Snapchat because I didn’t take any good ones yesterday.

I seem to have bought a 1998 Jetta GT. With 273k miles. And a broken axle . That hasn’t been registered in three years. Pray for me.

That picture is curious. LHD VW Jetta, with the rear licence plate from a 1997 green Rover 216 on the front. Dodgy.

I mean, I'm in the US. People throw random Euro plates on cars here. That'll be the first thing to go.

Buys 273k mile VW of unknown issue , wonders why his cars are all so unreliable.......

Man, you should get into 90s Mopar.

But a rear plate on the front.

Putting other plates on is okay, but at least get it the right way around. Lol.

Oh I know what the issue is that has it inop, it’s literally just a bad CV. $40 and an afternoon will fix that. Who knows what issues will come up in the future, though?

But, I'd rather push a VW than drive a Dodge.

Also look me in the eye and tell me truthfully you’ve never bought a car with unknown problems.

Aside, did you know that they briefly made a Caliber with TDI running gear? I learned that yesterday.

I mean, I daily a car built from junkyard parts purely out of spite. There was a point when we knew that for sure, but we're well past it.

When faced with a difficult problem with a super easy solution, double down. It’s the American way.

If you're interested, here's the rationale. With just one car, if I break something, I need it to go to a shop because I need a functioning car. If I have two, I can fix the problem that came up at my leisure, or at least til car 2 breaks. When that happens, I'll buy a third, and so on.

My cousin lived on this theory for a long time. There have been plenty of times when all three cars were broken at the same time. Plus, now you’re paying insurance and registration on two crapwagons! But you do you! ;)

This is why I love my truck so much. It frees me up to do all sorts of questionable vehicular shenanigans, because the truck will always get me to work.

Tags are like $20 a year, and I’ve already run a quote, this increases my insurance $200 a year. This is fiiiiine.

Your cousin's problem was that he didn't get a fourth car.

Come to think of it, I haven’t. I’ve known exactly what needed to be fixed on everything I’ve owned as far as our cheap/old cars goes.

I did not know about the Caliber, that sounds even worse than the Caliber already was and I didn’t think that was possible.....

Right. I know what I’m getting into (half shaft, fluids, brakes). Chassis is cleaner than my Golf, too.

And yep. Enough torque to twist that already floppy chassis right in half.

To be fair, a 2.0 16v TDI through a VW manual transmission is probably better than the torqueless wonders that were in gasoline Calibers.

(Citation: I’ve driven a 2.0 (I think) CVT Patriot. Do not recommend.)

We’re operating on this theory, having 3 cars, ahem four  if you count my truck, for 2 drivers. But they’re not even unreliable, so I think I’m doing this wrong

And in Ohio, where our roads are made of salt four months of the year. I got it to complement my OTHER Mk3.

None of the rust on either is structural, so...

Seeing what we have from taxes after paying some things off. Once we know for sure what we have I will know what exactly we can afford to spend. Then I’ll be shopping hard, I already have quite a few contenders lined up.

They get a bad rap, but they’re very hard to actually kill. If it’s a 2.0L, they basically run forever as long as you keep oil in them. The rest of the car will fall apart around the engine, stuff will stop working, things will fall off, there will be weird noises, but they rarely stop running.

Kinja'd!!! I like cars: Jim Spanfeller is one ugly motherfucker > RallyWrench
04/19/2019 at 16:59

Kinja'd!!!0

Correct. Keep feeding it oil and coil packs and them lasting over 200k isn’t surprising, it’s expected. The guy I bought this Jetta from had a few other ABAs (that’s the 2.slow) over 500k miles.

I had a few 2.0 mk3s. The engine is bulletproof.

I did blow 3 020 transmissions though.
