Not remotely a fan of the color , and bad timing financially so I’ll probably sit on my hands, but since this is much cheaper than a clean S2000 would be: whaddya think?

(There’s a clean 944 that was parked outside work today that has me contemplating Porsche ownership for probably the first time in my life.)

Well, I just watched Wheeler Dealers so I’m now an expert on replacing IMS bearings so, sure, go for it!

Well an S2K will be cheaper to own, it depends on how much you like it. My friend has an S2k CR and it has never given him trouble. I’ve driven both cars and I really like the S2K.

A yellow S2000 is definitely the dream, but I’m skeptical I’ll get as lucky as I did finding my yellow LJ.

My friend has a blue CR, I never heard of one before he got it.

The 2.5 is not a particularly quick car I don’t think. But it isn’t slow either. And I’m  almost positive it has the stock double row IMS which isn’t nearly as problematic as later cars with the single row. Glass rear window is a plus and so it the lowish miles.

Probably NP if you could get them under $7,500.

Tempting, clean and lightly modified. Might be a car that will appreciate. My friends is a track monster now, it has twin turbos now I think, it’s stupid fast.

This should have a double row, if so then better off leaving it until the clutch needs to be done.

I’m actually not all that concerned about performance. I just like roadsters. And Hondas.

Oh I like how it drove when he got it, it was very precise and just a very good roadster, for sure one of the best modern car s.

I hear you on the 944. If I were to be at all tempted to take out my wallet for a Pors che, it would be that or maybe  a 928.

For the east coast that would be on the higher end of an acceptable price. It’s very clean and well taken care of. From what I’ve been seeing around here , $6500 is the general asking price for Boxsters with the 2.5.

Not a bad price. Clean, low miles, might be worth it. No interior pictures is concerning. Is it an S? Nope. The S is worth the premium price. I’d stick with the S2000.

Seems like a decent price. If you’re comparing it to an S2K, the Boxster is a lot more usable with more space inside for taller people and more trunk room. Driving wise they are both great. Ownership costs aren’t nearly as bad on the Porsche as people would lead you to believe, they are well made and a lot of things can be had much cheaper than dealer prices if you shop around and are willing to do your own work.

I owned one for about 8 years until very recently, 2.7l engine. It’s a fantastic driver car, it handles like a go cart, the steering is telepathic, and the flat 6 sounds amazing.

It’s not a 1/4 mile car, the engine needs to rev high to go fast, but it’s also well mannered and quiet at city/highway speed. At around 4,000 rpm it changes personality and turns into an howling animal ... I miss that car.

IMS, blah, never had any issue with mine, that was properly maintained but not a garage queen either. I sold it at around 90,000 miles with no issues whatsoever.

$8k maybe a bit high at this point, though. $6,500 maybe ?

I have a hard time picturing me buying anything that isn’t a convertible. There are a few exceptions, like a classic Jeep or a really old, small coupe.

I’ve been eyeing 90’s Boxsters as well. I think the only thing that brings this car down is the color, silver is kind of tragic. But you can’t see it from the drivers seat so who cares. I hear they’re pretty solid cars, no squeaks or rattles or bad panel fitment even at that age and mileage. NP

I like to tease myself with the idea but it’s unlikely I’ll be in a place to do it this year.

I want something a little less gas-guzzly to switch off with my Jeep, and a convertible is always at the top of my list.

I wanted that 30th anniversary Miata but missed the window of opportunity to put down a deposit.

Reluctant CP. You can get them even cheaper than this, even later 986's. Early 986's were also more prone to bore scoring than later models.

NB - as in not bad.

CP < -> NB < -> NP

I keep wanting a 986S , 987S , or a 996

Almost every one of them is Arctic Silver, though, and surprisingly few have the red interior to at least spice the silver up a bit, and look like the original Boxster Concept car. If I get a silver Porsc h e convertible , it is going to be with red or red/black interior, bronze exterior accents, and a disappeared windshield frame. (black/dark gray wrap to blend into the windshield glass, like a the c oncept’s glass-over-frame , or black painted 987 RS60 special edition, and the 992 Speedster concept/heritage graphics )

Kinja'd!!!

But in reality... I would prefer a Rainforest Green, or a Carmine Red, or Aqua/Cobalt blue, or something interesting. Even dark Ocean Blue is becoming a bit expected behind A rctic S ilver, and Basalt Black, and Seal Gray.

Kinja'd!!!

And they all BEG for TechArt Formula wheels. T he concave rear wheel, and straight spokes look better to me than the turbo twist wheels... I’d eve n be tempted to go all “Hot Wheels” and fit an inch larger diameter rear wheels, as well as wider than the fronts, 17-18, or 18-19, and bronze centers like the Boxster Concept’s speedlines.

Haha, I just saw this article. That is my porsche in the picture (I just sold it). They are great cars, the one pictured was my second one. If you want a fun convertible that handles well go for it. Also they aren’t as expensive to maintain as you would think. Mine never broke down and cost less than $ 500 in parts to maintain over about 2 years (15k miles). Although I did all labor myself so that helps keep cost down.

On these cars you will see the color from drivers seat (there are humps on both sides of the hood where the headlights are housed). And you want the exterior to look nice. Regardless though I totally agree that the color was the biggest thing that I disliked about the car when I owned it.

In regards to fitament and rattles etc. They are very solid built cars and in general if you hear sounds (that arent engine or the funky water pump noise from behind your head) run away, a well taken car of one that’s running properly will not have any knocks squeaks etc.

The ims bearings were an issue, however if you watch the year you will be fine. Early gen 1 (97-99) had a 1% failure rate compared to the revised (00-03?) Had a 7% failure rate. They switched from a double row bearing to a single row bearing to reduce noise.

That seems a bit high.

I’ve had two 99s. One was bulletproof, put 50k+ miles on it with only a busted water pump (it was over 100k when it finally died a fiery death) . Hydroplaned into the wall on the highway at 75mph, flipped, and walked away. The second one was the shittiest car I ever owned, was in the shop 2x/month and finally sold it at a huge loss.

Soooooo...your mileage may vary. ha
