Well I have a 71', this is still a bit high if it wasn’t a totally original and clean series 1. It was restored . My friend has a lower number series 1 at his shop waiting for restoration, 400 something, it sat in a lot for years before he found it. I have an early series 2 with matching numbers , which is actually a better car to own if you never intend to sell, the vents below the rear window sucked in exhaust so they moved them to the upper side emblem spot, there are a few improvements. I am happy they are going up in value but a restored car isn’t worth that yet.

I noticed a Datsun convertible a couple of years ago, looked verra nice. This, though, this looks exquisite.

Mileage?

Yeah but it’s low miles and totally restored, sort of odd. I can see it being left in a garage super clean with low miles and then they had to go through it mechanically, then it’s a rare gem and more worth it. I love Zs but they just aren’t at that price yet, I’ve seen fairly low mileage JDM cars go for less. But it probably had rust, they came with rust, I bet they had to replace the dog legs because they rot from the inside from no drainage. My friend cuts them out of almost every car or tells them to keep an eye on it if they don’t go for it. Mine had 46,000 since 1971 and I did what this guy did, we rebuilt the engine and repainted, fixed all the trouble spots. If Pierre in SoCal did the work then it might be worth that since Nissan chose him to do official restorations. We are at a point with Zs where they show signs of going up more.

Holy shit, I thought $25k was the ceiling for a z.

I’m curious what the mileage of the examples your talking about. If something s its for ~50 years with only 1500 miles, shit is gonna be replaced, it warrants a restoration imho.
Imagine this is a mkiv Supra in 2044.

Nah. It's nice, but not $70k nice.

I agree, as does the buyer... a nd the seller $68k it is.

The trouble with Datsuns is you probably have to repaint anyway I guess. Even CA cars are rusty. At this point I think the low series 1 vin numbers are probably what makes them worth the most actually since it would be hard to find a car that didn’t need something done with the paint. They are single stage paint, I repainted mine with the correct paint and no modern enhancements. In any case I don’t think they are worth that much, I have seen sub 15k mile cars for 40k. I have seen very clean very original cars for less than 50k so I just think it’s still too much right now. The few Zs that Nissan hired Pierre in SoCal to officially restore and sell from dealerships might be worth that. I never see those for sale, everyone with one seems to be holding on to them. I think they made 40 or so. Of course a Z 432 or Z 432R would be worth a couple hundred grand probably, but they never sold those in the US.
Here is that article Jalop had on them:

Well the rarer low numbers ones do go higher but this is way too high. I have seen near 50k but it was a JDM and super clean and original. Of course the Z 432 cars are worth a fuck ton.

The Z was one of the first cars I remember coming out as a new model and wanting it (I was all of 9 or so). They came in really bright colors and looked so good. They sold a crap ton new compared to contemporary similars like the BRZ and 370z. In those days people bought sportscars like they buy SUVs and trucks now, with many people buying them because they are the cool thing to have, not because they need or desire their capabilities.

I get that, but if you’re reliving your youth, that price may not be too out of touch. There are a lot of reasons, many understandable that may lead somebody to pay a handsome sum for a damn near factory car.
I get it, not that I’d do it, but I absolutely get it.

There is so much truth in this I’d love to chat with you over a beer or three at some point. I wish people loved sports cars more, but it is what it is.

I’m getting s 71 in a couple of weeks and beyond getting it back up to good running I’m torn between a resto-mod or go original spec. A light restored-mod with about 200 hp and upgrade suspension is an attractive proposition.

Yeah if it isn’t a really original car then a later straight 6 wouldn’t be too bad. I have a couple bits from Techno Toy Tuning. I like their bolt on stuff, they have a lot now. Best upgrades are 5 speed, triples, good suspension package and the rear disk kit made a huge difference. I have one inch larger diameter and width wheels, lowish profile tires, but not super skinny. I think I have Eibach lowering springs and Tokico shocks, it all made it a much better car. I don’t need any more power, the places I like to drive are not even in 5th gear, that just helps crossing highway distances to get places. I am against cutting the cars so everything I have is bolt on, no shock tower mods for coil overs. If I built another it would be a rally car from a beat up Z that needed lots of help, I would weld in a little support based on what the factory teams did.

Was my first car. It was fun. Now I have a Jeep, so obviously
I have gone in a different direction over the years.
