It was the fuel tank strainer

The Honda is home. The tech’s approximate words were “we’re not sure how any fuel was getting through.” I guess the sock was really, really bad.

This is good news.

The bad news is, now it won’t idle worth a shit. Their best guess is some of the crud got into the idle jet and gummed it up. They said they could work on it, but didn’t want to until after my trip, which was nice of them to take into consideration.

The did suggest trying a few things. First up just running some cleaner through the tank. Also they suggested I “blow the snot out” by revving to 3000 RPM and then covering the intake until the engine almost dies.

For the moment, I think I’m just going to, as the kids say, send it.

I meant to post on your other one but couldn’t find the exact clip. On KombiLife they drove their van all the way from Chile to Alaska and at the end of the trip they were getting weird stalls on the Dempster.

Kinja'd!!!

It turned out there was a tiny piece of plastic in the gas tank, it would get sucked up against the pickup and stop the fuel flow. They tore it totally apart and with a stick were able to get the little piece out of the tank. Then it ran fine.

The carb and timing were dialed in with a shit fuel  supply, right? Maybe start from scratch on those now that fuel is happy.

How long’s it take you to pull the carb off? I mean, if it’s shit in the idle jet, just clean the bastard out and send it.

Should be able to get at the idle jet with the carb on by removing the idle mix screw, according to them.

Sounds about right. It’s a pretty typical configuration, that, but again: I’ll defer to the folks who actually know and have had hands on the car. (Especially since I am not really a carburetor guy.)

Other possibility I would suggest though is that due to the fuel starvation at the pickup, the carb is actually adjusted wrong and idling poorly due to excessive rich. So I’d probably try fiddling with the idle adjustment before pulling it apart.

A friend of mine had a similar problem. His car would run AWESOME downhill, then sputter and choke on the way uphill. They found some junk in the tank that would roll away from the intake when the car was pointed downhill, then roll back and block the intake when the car was pointed uphill.

Sneak peek!  The “real” reveal will probably be when I start posting trip photos.  I’ve been too busy trying to get it running to do a true glamour shot.

Hah! the same thing happened on my parents old Super Beetle when I was a teen.

the thing would run for about 15 minutes then die and you couldn’t restart it for about 20 minutes.

Ah ha! Something we all overlooked, glad they got it sorted out.

The “rev it up and block the intake with a rag” thing works well actually, often times will pull crap out of the idle passages.

Damn. You and AMGtech appear to have called it. Tweaked the idle mix adjustment and it seems to be OK. Then again the problem seems intermittent so... we’ll see.

That’s how you know we’re real boys mechanics!

Probably still some crud in there but it should just work through in time. If it doesn’t, then clean it proper.

True that. Alcantara is great on surfaces you don’t touch though ! Headliners and pillars in particular .

Everyone touches the A-pillar any more, trying to see around the damn things. Worse, WK’s have the grab-handles in the A-pillars.

Kinja'd!!!

I have no  idea what the hell I’m going to do about this. I was thinking aluminum core and leather, but there isn’t enough anchor to support the weight.

Interesting. We don't have an issue with people touching our pillars. Grab handles on them!? Who thought that was a good idea!? Something secured by a screw and a plastic clip. That'll NEVER break!
