We had a crane at SLB that was a cab over engine. It was quite an old truck.

I see them on occasion and always mean to get a picture (they’re so cool!) but I never do for some reason.

I vaguely recall something about them being preferr ed for island duty because they take up less space on the ferry, but obviously that purple truck got over ok (though maybe t hey paid a little more)

There’s a guy in my neighborhood with one he uses for work. It’s just like the one above, but dark metallic blue and cream  white with steer horns above the grille.

There’s at least two generations that will forever see a COE truck and think of Optimus Prime, probably this sequence specifically:

Most of the smalller businesses use COE box trucks but all the big ones (lumber, grocers, oil, etc) use longnose semis.

They’re not all that uncommon in the borderland, albeit usually not in great condition and always with Mexican tags. When I was commuting between El Paso and Las Cruces, I probably saw at least several a week doing local runs between US suppliers in the area and Mexican factories on the other side of the fence. For that kind of work where it is mostly time and negligible mileage , I would imagine the drivers pay is far more of a cost factor than anything really having to do with the truck so long as it starts when the key is turned. It has, however, been a long time since I’ve seen one in use with US tags on it.

A local moving company had one in service moving trailers from one location to another until the last year or so.  Other than that one, it’s probably been at least a decade since I’ve seen one in service.

Indeed, though I start it sooner so you can see him run down those Decepticons with the reflection in his grill:

I see them fairly regularly. The older ones are usually restored and customized with matching trailers while the newer ones (Freightliner Argosy) are generally stock.
