—Oakland Police Department’s Response to Illegal Sideshow Activity—

BACKGROUND: This past Sunday, April 14th, the Oakland Police Department anticipated illegal sideshow activity in the City of Oakland and increased staffing in response. By mid-evening, the number of sideshow participants increased to approximately 1,000 spectators and vehicles that were spread out in various locations of the city. This stretched the Department’s resources beyond its capacity. Simultaneously, there were multiple Priority 1 emergency calls unrelated to sideshow activity that our officers were committed to.

At approximately 8:30 PM, at 42nd Avenue and International Boulevard, members of the sideshow crowd surrounded a commercial transport truck and an AC Transit bus. The driver of the commercial transport truck was removed at gunpoint and the truck was set on fire (he sustained no injuries). The AC Transit bus’s windows were broken out and the bus was set on fire (no injuries reported). As officers attempted to clear the area, so that the Oakland Fire Department could extinguish the fire, gunshots were heard from inside the crowd, which delayed response. Ultimately, the area was cleared and both fires were extinguished. The sideshow activity city wide concluded by 10:00 PM.

•An Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy suffered serious leg injury during this incident.

•Officers at the sideshows issued close to 200 citations throughout the day and into the evening. Numerous vehicles were towed, and several firearms were recovered. Once we have the final numbers, we can provide an update.

The attached video is from ALCO Department.

The Oakland Police Department, along with our neighboring law enforcement agencies, will take a regional approach to illegal sideshow activity. We will continue our partnership with the California Highway Patrol, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, San Leandro PD, Hayward PD, Fremont PD and Alameda PD.

This weekend, you will see a large of contingency of law enforcement dedicated specifically to illegal sideshow, accompanied by air support and our regional law enforcement partners as we team up to deter and take enforcement action by issuing citations, making arrests, and towing vehicles. Violent, disruptive, illegal behavior will not be tolerated in the City of Oakland. Our investigators will be working to identify those responsible for committing crimes and participating in illegal sideshow activity.

The City of Oakland recognizes that illegal sideshow activity is not unique to Oakland. This is a regional issue that affects our neighborhoods, businesses and the quality of life. Historically, illegal sideshow activity has led to serious injury or death of spectators and or participants. The City will continue to work with City Council, City Divisions/resources, our neighboring cities and other law enforcement partners to find long term solutions to illegal sideshow.

I find this really annoying for so many reasons.

1) It gives actual enthusiasts a bad rep.

2) It could result in me getting paced or pulled over by the police because I drive an Exocet.

3) There aren’t enough places left in Alameda county for car enthusias ts thanks to NIMBYs and the cost of owning such a land-heavy business in a high rent area.

4) Oakland (like much of the Bay area), does jack-all to give youths healthy options outside of school. Most of these people come from incredibly poor homes where parents are at best working, at worst abusive or already dead thanks to violence.

5) It can get in the way of people minding their own business (like the truck driver in this case). Plus, you can be arrested for being anywhere nearby when one of these happens.

To give this some color: the sideshow occurred just down the street from Puff n Stuff Head Shop - a fine local establishment dedicated to providing community support through what appears to be cannabis and mushrooms. Of course, the mushrooms aren’t legal, so those are only on the menu if you’re not a cop.

Ugh, those people definitely aren’t “automotive enthusiasts” (okay, some of them may well be as well), they’re just ruffians with nothing better to do with their shitty lives.

Let me give you a good question. When has an Exocet ever participated in a sideshow?

The ones doing this are idiots who bought too much horsepower on bad credit.

Never, but I don’t want the extra looks since I’m running without plates (operating permit only) until my climb up Mount DMV is over. Just in case, I have all my paperwork in the car in a plastic bag but having to un-harness, remove said paperwork, explain, put away, and reharness is just not fun. I simply don’t need EXTRA attention. I get plenty enough as-is.

I got pulled over the other night in my Lancer. I tapped the downshift to first a bit early and that got the officer’s attention. He then pulled me over for being 1 day at putting a new sticker on the plate.

Every time I’m in the Oakland area in my Miata, I get paced by police. When they pull up next to me and see a white guy in glasses, they peel off. The profiling is real.

Yeah, can't help that. It seems like in neighborhoods where there's a sizable black or minority population, and a lack of quality education or opportunities, there's bound to be a higher incidence of criminal or misdemeanor activity.

I understand with flash mobs and house parties how things can go viral, but I can never understand how these massive gatherings in CA don’t attract cops from all directions.

Oh, they do. The problem is coordinating. When this happens, cops have to stage and prepare for contact. It's better to engage in an organized fashion than doing it in chaos.
