Alright, the Wagovan has been at the car doctor all day and they have some good news and some bad news.

The good news is everything I said was OK was OK.

They checked the timing, valves, manifold vacuum, distributor, and carburetor tune and they were happy with most of it. They adjusted the carb and timing a bit, but overall were very happy with the setup.

The bad news is they think the problem is the strainer in the tank. The reason this is bad news is I don’t buy it.

They do, however, claim this is something they’ve encountered before and the sock/ strainer was the problem .

Skepticism aside, I told them to go for it. Bit pricey, but this close to the trip I don’t want to deal with it.

Wish us luck!

Definitely plausible. And draining the tank wouldn't necessarily get gunk off of it. I've seen it before too, on other cars.

That would be awesome if this gets little Honda back up to +100 health.

Strainer diagnosis c hecks out.

I wasn’t willing to advance the theory because I’m not familiar enough with the vehicle in question.

But collapsing / flapping strainer will cause fuel flow disruption and surge in carb’d engines. Which would cause your symptoms. When the strainer flaps out, surges, causing backfire due to flooding. So yes, the symptoms absolutely align.

Plot twist, it doesn't use a strainer, it uses a collander!

I’m waiting for the phone call “we dropped the tank but there wasn’t a strainer in there.”

I yell at people who drain tanks through the filler neck. That’s like ‘changing’ the transmission fluid by sucking it out through the dipstick tube. Actually cleaning out a fuel tank is a massive pain in the ass.

Totally p o s s i b l e . When I started recommissioning my Metro Turbo Mk1 I flushed the tank, the lines, renewed the carburettor seals, fuel filter, fuel pump, the lot. Although everything looked clean the car still had a fuel starvation problem - it would still splutter and die.

I decided to flush the tank again, but this time I was a bit more thorough (there is never time to do things right, but there is always time to do them twice...) so I unbolted de fuel sender unit... which also has the outlet for the fuel.

The sock was completely covered in a rubbery mixture of old sticky petrol and rust. As much as I tried I was unable to clean it. No wonder sometimes it would not go.

A quick google search says that a Civic Shuttle does have a little sock on the fuel pump and that there is an access panel under the rear seat to remove it without dropping the tank.

There is a sock, yes, but I’m unsure if there is an access panel.  I can’t tell for sure but I think the article you linked was for a 4th gen wagon and mine is a 3rd gen.

I honestly didn’t even realize the Shuttle got multiple generations. I thought it was one of those 1 generation failed experiments.

Haha yup! Multiple iterations! The 1985 and 1986 3rd gen versions are the weird angular ones with the little Land Rover-esque roof windows, push-button 4WD, and a solid rear axle. In 1987 they dropped the push button 4WD in favor of a viscous coupling, or RealTime 4WD (RT).

Kinja'd!!!

1988 through 1991 was the 4th gen that most people know about., which have the RT 4WD and fully independent suspension. Like this “Honda Beagle”:

Honestly I like the 4th gens a little better, but you gotta love a solid rear axle and that funky 80s Japanese-ness of the 3rd gen.
