Where can I dispose / recycle empty motor oil bottles? Everywhere I’ve checked doesn’t take them and doesn’t know who does.
I'm south of Seattle, if you have a local suggestion.

We don’t recycle them. The oil has pretty much contaminated the plastic. They go in the garbage, but if you’re insistent, simple green will remove whatever residue you have in the bottles.
Then you can probably mail them to a recycler that takes them .

Just regular garbage isn't it?

This is kind of a pain. When I was driving a rotary, I would have 5W20 bottles stack up in my garage. My solution was to go the quick lube place around the corner and ask them if I could drop them off with them. They were cool and said yes. In return, they get my business.
Otherwise, I would have had to take them to the chemical waste center.

I’ve watched a number of video reports that detail how China is no longer accepting a lot of our recyclables. So instead of towns getting money for, or breaking even with recyclables , they now need to pay to have the items recycled . This is causing a lot of towns to toss the recyclables into landfills, even if sorted mostly correctly.

My local dump has an "oil bottle only" bin next to the tanks you dump used motor oil in. I have no idea what they do with the comtainers, but thats where I put mine.

“ The oil has pretty much contaminated the plastic."
Isnt that a bit like coating a chicken breast in egg and bread crumbs to fry it?

Thanks, I suspected this.

Regular garbage. There isn’t that much oil in the bottle nor is it that bad for the environment
but I don’t think recycling wants it.

I’ve always just chucked them, or filled them with old oil (or new oil I didn’t want to keep around) and given them to a place that does oil recycling for disposal.

Yeah, it’s a problem. I hate that the response seems to be we should do additional labor sorting and decontaminating instead of paying for the far less valuable time of a low-skilled Chinese worker, but that’s where we seem to be. In any event, hopefully just a temporary problem.

Go to your local auto store, they will take care of the bottles.

I’m glad you asked, and here’s a very interesting video for you!
Plastic containers work much the same way. Actual oil recycling facilities will collect oil and plastic bottles. They’ll drain the oil, then process the plastic not entirely dissimilarly.
The correct place to recycle the bottles is any auto parts store that recycles oil.

I just put them in my recycling bin...but I have no idea what happens to it after that.

K ing county? I drain them clean and put them in with the regular plastic recycling - never had an issue...

Yup. plastic is actually a petroleum product. When you mix certain kinds of oil or petroleum with a plastic bottle, it’ll start going soft.
That’s the kind of contamination recyclers want to avoid.

Right, once all the local convenience stores are powered by cold fusion there should be plenty of free energy, and we can finally utilize the vast array of natural resources our landfills have become.

I do imagine there will be a point when we will be mining landfills. It will be a bit strange, and obviously less efficient than sorting in the first place.
When I say temporary, that’s not what I’m talking about though. Higher garbage disposal costs, sagging labor costs, or higher raw material prices can tip the balance back in favor of recycling without requiring any major changes elsewhere.

Who throws out oil bottles? You may never know if you need an empty one to catch some sort of fluid in.
